Agavehound-

I honestly would love your advice. I have tried threats, anger, crying and guilt. Juvenile diabetes is a tough disease.

JAG

sigh, tell me about it,,,,,,my sister has had it for 40 years,,,,,,she's had a massive heart attack, lost the sight in one eye, lost kidney function, and had a failed kidney transplant,,,,,,and there's more, but that's the worst of it.

vicious disease :(

Hawkeye, I'm fortunate that I didn't smoke more that 1/2 pad so getting off of 'em shouldn't have changed my A1c results much, but I was worried since I was vaping so much. :D

Commaholly, as bad as that is it does get worse. My family has a history of it and a couple great aunts didn't take care of themselves and lost feet before passing away in their 80's. On the other hand, their sister, my grandmother (my avatar pic is from her funueral 3 yrs ago) lived to the ripe age of 95 and had diabetes and smoked 1 cigg a day.

Gotta take care of that stuff, it is NASTY!

I am also afflicted with diabetes, but I vape heavily. My last a1c was 5.5 and I seldom have blood sugar over 100. All my other blood readings are also excellent. Seems the vaping is at worse a non-factor...

How do you keep it that low? Type 1 or II? I can't imagine mine being that well controlled...yet. :D

Agave-do you have type 1 or type 2? Congrats on the great A1C

Justagal: I also have a 14 yr old daughter with Type 1 diabetes (pump wearer) and her A1C's were approaching 10 this spring. The frustration is-trying to get enough consistent readings to figure out which settings need to be changed. Or havingher test BEFORE she eats....and not making her feel bad when the numbers arent where they need to be.

Agavehound, I have type two. I do take one Glipiside XL each day. But basically, I had to come to the realization that I could not longer eat for recreation. Now its for nourishment only, and I can tell you that's no fun. I also spend an hour in the gym each day, no matter what, which is also a job. I'm sure that's one reason vaping is so pleasurable/important to me--its the one thing I do for myself and pure enjoyment....

Angiebubs, I'm a type II insulin dependent. Try explaining to her that in order to get her glucose under control you HAVE to know what the readings are. It's difficult and a pita, but totally worth it in the long run. If you/she want to win the battle, just to live a good life with diabetes, you need the info.

My family is kinda funny 'cause nobody talked about diabetes to me until I was diagnosed, then I discovered by brother, father, grandmother and great aunts all had it. I was seeing red for a couple years afterwards I was so ticked off! I wonder how long I could have delayed the onset if I knew.

Moedog, ah man...I was hoping for a magic bullet! I love dang near everything that is bad for us, bread, chocolate, bread, fried potatoes, bread, pasta...yeah, I'm a dedicated bread fan! :p

I almost smacked my Dr. in August, he said I would NEVER get off the insulin, then proceeded to tell me how his sister beat diabetes. I guess hoping for a cure is out of the question, too much money to be made off of us.

Four months ago my a1c was higher than 12. The doctor prescribed insulin, meformin, and lovastatin. I'm a type 2. I refused to take the insulin. I took the metformin and the lovastatin for 4 days and had to stop because of the horrible side effects (not going into details here). So I immediately went on the Dr. Atkins Diabetes Revolution diet. Monitored my bs 4 times a day, some times more. A month ago I had the follow up a1c test and it came at 5.8. I did warn the doctor that the next blood check is going to be higher as I'm celebrating the holidays, I will go back to the strict diet come January LOL.

Congratulations on your a1c, I know how difficult it is to manage it. I was able to figure out how food affected me because I kept a journal of what I ate and how it affected my blood sugar levels every day several times a day.

Wow! That takes dedication and willpower Rosa. I used to be happy not seeing any readings over 200 but now I get irked if it gets above 150, which still happens way too much.

I understand what you mean by the side effects of the meds. I was on metformin before insulin and it was unbearable.

I'm just happy that vaping hasn't affected my sugars, REALLY happy. :D

I checked in at 6.9 about a month ago. Since then I've dropped 9 pounds, switched from copious amounts of light beer every night (don't ask) to a much more sensible amount of rum and diet cola, quit smoking, and have cut way back on sugar in the foods I eat. I feel like a totally different person, now I just need to work in some exercise. I bought everything I need to put up a chin-up bar downstairs and hope to work that in everyday after work.

Rosa - that is an amazing story, keep it up!
