Hello, I've been vaping for about two and a half years now. I have no intention of quitting vaping, my lungs seem much better, clearer and I feel fitter, BUT, over the past year i have developed a really annoying persistent cough. Last year I visited the doctor, i had a chest xray and an asthma check, all is good. Has anyone else experienced similar problems since vaping? Maybe my lungs are extra sensitive now, after a lifetime of smoking? Im 45 now, so smoked for 28 years. Thanx

First of all. I'm Not a Doctor. So Anything I say should not be Construed as Medical Advise.

Maybe a little Background would help give a little Perspective of the Type of Vaper you are.

What type of e-Liquids do you Use? PG to VG Ratio? Nicotine Level? etc.

Are your e-Liquids Heavily Flavored / Sweetened?

How Much e-Liquid do you Use in an Average Day?

What type of Ohms and Wattages do you Normally Vape with?

How Much Water/Fluids do you drink?

How Much Exercise to you Get.

etc...

Hello, thanx for your time to try and help me figure things out. I vape with VG, the make is 'smoketastic', nicotine level is 18mg, 0.56 ohms and 3 volts which is the lowest setting, i tend to use the very subtle favours, i tend to top up the chamber before work and top up again after work, I make an effort to drink plenty of fluids, im a builder and I have to work hard even when its very hot weather, i hardly drink alcohol now, i am very fit and always busy, im 45 years old and only 10 stone 4 lbs. I have noticed the past 2 or 3 years i have developed hay fever, being a builder i have worked in dusty environments for 29 years, i have also had pneumonia about 18 years ago. My lungs and fitness have definitely improved, i can breathe easier and my lungs seem to have opened up, i had a chest xray last year and an asthma check, they told me i have the lungs of a 36 year old. My really annoying, problem now is a constant cough, it takes so much effort to just cough up hardly anything, if I don't clear it, i hav a wheeze. Also my throat feels swollen and restricted and I have trouble swallowing, which I sometimes think its nothing to do with the vaping, but an allergy i have developed to something? Darren :)

Swallowing is sometimes an issue for me too while vaping. I think it's just that the vapor dries out soft tissue and unless I have water or a beverage in my mouth, swallowing gets hard to do.

I don't have a persistent cough or the other issues (I don't have the dramatic improvements either because my years of chain smoking resulted in COPD) but if they bother you, see if you can refrain from vaping for a little while and see if they improve? Best of luck.

Coughing is often a sign of reflux and has nothing to do with lungs. A good gastroenterologist can check you. The swallowing thing is kinda a giveaway.

Some doctors don't realize that coughing is gastro related, but reflux/GERD quite often manifests as coughing and most every gastro knows this now, although regular GPs may not.

Also, there are certainl flavorings that make me cough, many are lung irritants like cinnamon, etc.

Hello, many thanks for your message. Im sorry to hear that you have COPD, a friend of mine has it and she does suffer with it, copd is also something I've thought i may have. Im thinking of trying to go without nicotine starting tomorrow morning, but it really is tough, it drives me mad how nicotine addiction can rule your brain and your life, i wish I had never started. Take care, darren :)

Thanx for the advice. This is also something that has crossed my mind. I've just joined this site today, it's interesting to hear that lots of other people also suffer with similar problems as me, I've not met anyone who has problems with vaping, it just seemed to be me. Darren :)

Well people DO have problems with vaping, if they have a sensitivity to a flavor or to PG, etc.

However, anyone who was ever a smoker SHOULD get "scoped" anyway, since smoking does do airway/esophageal damage, and scoping will also tell the gastro if you have reflux/GERD/hiatal hernia, etc. It may be something very simple, as in latter case, it's somewhat anatomical, ie. the seal around where your esophagus meets stomach is gets loose and some of the acid backs up. Some people never even have heartburn or anything, but develop this persistent cough. It feels like something in the airway, but it actually isn't.

You can certainly try vaping unflavored nicotine pg/vg solution for 2-3 weeks and see if it goes away, thus ruling out one of your flavorings. :)

Going w/out nic is probably not a good solution! You may end up back on ciggies

IT will take you at least 2-3 weeks to get appt. with a gastro anyway, so may as well get started on the unflavored nic solution. :)

Welcome Dazza Dazza!
I too work as a builder, and woodworker, and have for most of my life. I'm 56 years old and I've been vaping for one year.
I've found that most medical issues I'm experiencing now are directly attributable to: no longer being a smoker (the body is adjusting), and the fact that those years of damage are catching up with me and it's simply more apparent without the cigarette use.
I wish you all the best.
