what is actually the deal with the health of these things?

For many of us, they are the only way we have ever been able to stop smoking cigarettes. I don't know. I am a lab rat. But I am not smoking anymore. If you don't smoke, don't start these thinking they are "safe". We really don't know.

I agree calling them safe is misleading. We don't know. I feel better in the mornings now compared to when I would smoke, but that's about as scientific as I can get. Hopefully some in depth studies will be done in the future. There is more than just the eliquid to think about. My main concern isn't the eliquid, it's the shody quality of the atomizers that are being built in China. Some are excellent and have no problems, others give off sharp a metalic taste. I figure, if I'm tasting metal, I'm inhaling metal and that can't be good. So I'd like to see strict testing and quality controls put on importing them. I'm also kind of sick of getting one out 4 atomizers that actually work. Sorry, I'm ranting a bit, but this has been a bad week for my 510. Quite a few issues with it.

I'm 100% sure they are better for health than regular cigarettes.
I feel better since I'm not smoking analogs, my throath stopped hurting, I'm not coughing at all anymore, I have more energy and I'm not breathless after climbing up 5 stairs. I feel healthier than ever.

But I'm not sure if they are safe.
I would suggest smokers to make the big switch. If I do feel better (as so as many other members from this forum), it's a good thing.
But I would never make a non-smoker to start on those, even the ones with no nic e-juice.

So are these things actually not bad for you? it seems like there are a bunch of chemicals in them from the toxicology reports...

In my opinion they are better for you than regular cigarettes, as they contain nearly 4,000 less additives. From what I understand most of the chemicals in these are used for additives in food. But ultimately, you are not ingesting them through your digestive track. They are going through your respiratory system.

All I have to go on is my own experiences, such as a constant ache I was having in my lungs while I was smoking is now gone. I can breathe easier now, as well as my lung capacity has improved dramatically.

But ultimately, there is no definitive or long term study that I am aware of. IMHO, your best bet for better health is just to quit completely.

As of now, the only evidence we have regarding the health benefits is strictly anecdotal. But almost everyone who has made the switch has made the same claims, myself included. These benefits include, but are not limited to:

  • I have increased lung function. I no longer get winded when doing even moderately strenuous exercise, such as walking up stairs or steep hills. I also no longer feel as if someone is sitting on my chest when I try to take a really deep breath.
  • I am sleeping better.
  • I can smell things again.
  • I can taste things again.
  • I no longer reek of smoke. (nor does my car)
E-cigarettes should not be marketed as a healthy or safe (both absolutes) way of getting nicotine. But, for that matter, neither should the FDA-approved NRTs since they also contain the same trace nitrosamines. And, besides, dependence on any chemical -- nicotine, caffeine, whatever -- is really not a recommended part of a completely healthy lifestyle.

They also should never have been directly marketed as a healthier or safer (both relative) way of getting nicotine. They should have been marketed only as an alternative to smoking tobacco. The health benefits of those who switched would have become so self-evident and widespread that everyone would have noticed anyway.

What really gets me about the arguments from the FDA, AGs from several states, some in the medical profession, and other special interest groups is essentially this:

"Well we know smoking tobacco will kill you. But don't switch to these e-cigarettes! No one knows what THEY will do to you!"

Honestly. Can they just sit back for a minute and LOOK at the absurdity of that statement?
