i have asthma, and it has eased greatly since i gave up the fags, and started to exclusively vape last April...

however, ive had a some bad days lately where ive been very short of breath, and my inhaler hasnt been able to ease it much...which is unusual...

the one thing those days have in common was that they were days after id been vaping a homemade zero nic mixture of just glycerine and menthol crystals the night before...
i dont make it too strong, and i use the best possible glycerine and crystals...

ive vaped pure glycerine on and off for months now with no problems whatsoever...but the glycerine and menthol crystal mixture leaves me with a heavy feeling in my chest next morning-like when i smoked...and quite severe shortness of breath...

im not certain its not just coincidental...but i doubt it somehow...it happens every time...

has anyone else experienced this kind of thing from using this mixture, whether asthmatic or not?

I had chest pains and heavy breathing when I tried menthol liquid and I don't have asthma. At the time I put it down to recently quitting the fags. I was Googling about this today coincidentally and it appears that menthol crystals are levo-menthol which can be hazardous when inhaled.

levo - MENTHOL

There are plenty of other safety warnings for it around as well. Not sure if the chest pains I had were related but I've not had them with any other liquid apart from the menthol

I've found out today that, aside from nicotine, the other ingredient in Nicorette inhalators is levo-menthol so it must be generally safe to inhale. Maybe it's the concentration of it when using crystals that's the problem.

I've been using menthol crystals for months now without issues. I do use a much milder mix now but my first mix was like smoking a Halls cough drop. Now I could feel that in my chest for a while after vaping but never really felt it was a problem.

When I was doing article research, I read that the inhaler had menthol added to temper the incredibly harsh throat hit of nicotine. I have one of those (used) inhalers that I've taken apart and pried the core out, then soaked it in e-liquid and put it back. Not bad. But not a high enough nic hit.

Note to anyone trying this: Your exposed nicotine will maintain strength for only a day or less. Then you're sucking flavored air. Even the Big Pharma device I had says to use within 10 hours.

a heavy feeling in my chest...and quite severe shortness of breath...

i've experienced this too :( i'm going to wait it out and see if it goes away, as i'm new to vaping, i want to give my body a chance to adjust...

btw i do not have asthma or any other respitory problems. i'm usually short of breath due to my love affair w/ analogs, but the heaviness in my throat and chest is new. it could just be that i'm vaping quite heavily, more than i ever usually smoked...

i'm going to give this a chance, i do so want to be away from tobacco, but i do not want to quit smoking. or "smoking".

I remember years ago hearing that if you smoked menthol cigs(analog) that yet another danger was getting menthol crystals in your lungs. Urban legend I hope. It didn't stop me then, and I use crystals in my juice now. I grate them with a teaspoon in a tea strainer and then just use a tweezer full in a small juice bottle (10ml?) and shake.

I've noticed the same shortness of breath and heaviness in chest the last few days...like Elle said...like used to feel after partying and smoking too many analogs. I could breathe so much better after a week or so off analogs. Now after over 2 months I feel almost worse than I did smoking. I do NOT use the menthol crystals, or even PS menthol very often, and not at all this week. Have been vaping a lot and using some higher nic vanilla. Hoping it's just this combination, but now that I really think about all the other new symptoms the last week or so ..I may be allergic to pg.

I must admit reading this thread is a little disheartening for a noob, maybe these are not as healthy as we all think they are.

I have not been vaping long enough to know yet but i am interested in knowing if when you guys switched from analogs to e-cigs did you feel an improvement in your health?

The e-liquid that we smoke seems to me to be a quite thick gloopy substance i wonder if when the vapor go's into out lungs it could revert to this stcky substance almost similar to the tar in an analog? What are your thoughts on this? After only vaping for a couple of days i dont want to get myself into something that makes you feel as bad as cigs, thats the main reason i started this.

When you have this feeling does it last long? Im more interested in the people that have these feelings without the menthol, as if it is just menthol that can be easily avoided.

Cheers Lee.

Yes, Lee I did feel a huge improvement after being off the analogs and still do! The first couple of weeks were great. My main problems were from the PG and not wanting to believe I was allergic to it ! Vaped it all day yesterday w/o cutting with VG and there's no doubt now :pbeen a sick puppy!

I would be shocked if ecigs turn out to be even close to as dangerous as analogs. Guess that's something we all have to decide for ourselves, for the time being.

Congrats on 2nd day w/o the smelly smokes, before long the thought of one may just disgust youl ;)
