Hello everyone,
I was wondering if anyone has had any issues with the Helios rda? I gave one to an online friend who was having troubles getting the things he needed to continue vaping.So I made up a care package for him with everything he would need to vape, ( he is disabled and lost most of his vaping supplies )
In that package I gave him a Helios well after about 2 months I got a message telling me the helios was no longer working, he seems to think it shorted out ?~? I have not heard of an RDA shorting out I know the coil build can do this, but does anyone have any ideas on this ? could it be the insulator got melted on the positive post and is causing this ? any help would be greatly appreciated !

Thanks !:vapor:

So you built the coil for him or you just bought stuff online and had it sent to him?

An rda is a simple device; if he says it shorted out, I'm guessing he was using a mech.

If he never used an rda before maybe he just didn't know what to do.

The coil can short on the top cap.
The 510 connection itself can short out because there's only a hairline between positive and negative.

Yes I built the first coil for him it was made with 28 gauge kanth dual coil that was 1.2 ohm with cotton wick, and yes he was using a Mech, Panzer I believe. He was not a total noob but definitely a greenhorn had been building his own for a month maybe 2 I do know he did switch coils out after a week or so and started sub ohm vaping he was making his coils down around .5-.4 ohm I made sure he started using the correct batt's I told him to get a couple VTC 5's but I believe he ended up with the VTC 4's due to the vape shop near him not having the 5's. At .5 I am sure that helios was getting quite hot and I was thinking he may have had the coils too close to the insulator on the positive post I have done that myself starting out and noticed a melted area on the insulator, any suggestions on what to look for or on testing the RDA?

Thank You Very much for your fast response

a 28 gauge kanthal dual coil working out to 1.2 ohm sounds too high ohms for a mech; or did you mean 1.2 ohm each, which works out to 0.6 ohm dual coil?

If he's got a meter he should be able to see for sure if the rda is shorted out even when there is no coil;

Probably nothing much you can do if there's a melted insulator;
but I don't have a helios myself so I don't know the details.

Sorry i should have made that more clear yes each coil was 1.2 so it was .6, he had no issues with that setup I gave him. It came after he started making his own coils. I spoke with him a couple hours ago and found out he was actually going as low as .2 ohms. Myself I do not go below .3 I usually stick at .5 on my DNA 30. with a VTC 5, using my Paradigm Magma, Tobh, or Stillare. He has an ohm meter but it's just a cheap one you screw your RDA into.This is the best photo of the helos i could find.So if it is shorted, do you think it was because of the heat? or maybe a bad coil ? what would cause an RDA to short out itself, and not just the coils? I wish I could see it myself, maybe I can get him to take a photo of what the post and deck look like. Again Thank You for your help with this !

If it is shorted, as you yourself said it could be from the insulator melting.

You spoke to him a couple hours ago, and still don't know if it's really shorted?
I mean with some people if the coil burns out, they'll call that 'shorted out'.

anyway if he's playing around with 0.2 ohm on a mech with a cheap meter to measure with,
'it shorted out' could just be a short version off:
"Ouch!! HOT!!!, bang bang;" grab towel unscrew mod drop everything on the floor.
