Hello All,

My name is Matt Melvin and I've been a member here for sometime but have never posted. Bad Matt!

I would like to introduce myself as I am the newest Subject Matter Expert for AEMSA. Since becoming a SME, I've been active with Kurt Kistler revising the AEMSA 2013 Standard and preparing for the presentation AEMSA gave to the FDA on March 21.

My background is in synthetic organic/medicinal chemistry and I currently manage the HPLC group at Enthalpy Analytical in Durham, NC. I've been vaping for over two years but still consider myself a novice especially compared to the experience of other AEMSA members.

I do formulate my own eliquid and have several advanced devices including my Silver Bullet (never forget your first!), a Tesla, and the newest addition the eVIC.

Please drop me a line if I can ever be of any assistance in the areas of organic and analytically chemistry.

I have a question...Is there such a 'synthetic nicotine' ???
Something that could replace organic nicotine if the FDA were to try to shut vaping down ???

There certainly is synthetic nicotine. Many elegant total synthesis do exist for it in the chiral, S-nicotine form. The problem is that these methods are extremely expensive to produce on scale. Around $300/gram. It's much more cost effective to extract s-nicotine from tobacco and purify to a high percentage. These purified extracts will contain minor tobacco alkaloids somewhere in the 1-1.5% range.

Migrating from tobacco-derived nicotine to some other source would remove FDA's regulatory authority for e-cigs as a tobacco product but could cause e-cigs to be viewed in a more heavily regulated arena such as a drug delivery device. This would then require clinical trials for products to be placed on the market.

I DIY my own juices now, and stay with 60mg/ml strength to cut down to 8,12 and 18mg/ml in a 40/60 vg/pg blend.
I do not really even want to mess with 100mg/ml stuff.

Hi Merge5, two years and 7 whole posts..... If we ask enough questions you will be up to double digits in no time. lol. If you were a professional golf instructor I would have some questions, however synthetic organic/medicinal chemistry, might be a little over my head. It is good to know that there are several experts with scientific and engineering based professions around. There are some things best understood and explained on a scientific level, like the response above. Glad you checked in.

Totally understand your caution around high % nicotine. I've been playing with ratios for a while and landed on 50:50 PG:VG at ~25mg nic. I've been vaping unflavored rather exclusively but am planning on experimenting with some flavors.

Thank you! I was never a pack-a-day smoker unless adult beverages were involved and have probably smoked less than a pack total in the past year or so. Vaping is way more compatible with my outdoor hobbies.
