Hello, ECF!

My handle is “closetsmokr” because that’s what I’ve been/tried to be for the past 20 years! Wow! I can’t believe it’s been 20 years since I started smoking Marlboro’s! The whole thing actually started, innocently (snicker) enough when I was just out of college, and a couple of my friends and I would smoke clove cigarettes on the weekends. I liked the flavor of clove cigarettes better than regular ones, but they were expensive, and they were very pungent. So, if you smoked them in public places, people would complain, and then you were SOL. So, after a while, the clove cigarette phase turned into the menthol cigarette lifestyle. And then, before I knew it, I was up to a pack a day - been there ever since.

Now, to make my cigarette smoking even more interesting, I never smoked in front of anyone that I didn’t want to share my “secret” with – including co-workers, family, friends, acquaintances, etc. I really didn’t want anyone to know that I smoked, mainly because I didn’t want to put up with the nagging and harassment of people constantly telling me to quit, or the way people look down on those who smoke and talk very negatively about them (usually behind their backs).

After a few near misses this summer – people practically busting me on my hidden habit – I decided I better find “some” way to keep from having to lie or defend myself over a pastime that I happen to enjoy very much. Thankfully, I lucked into finding something online about ecigs. I can’t even recall what keywords I used, or exactly what linked me to this world, but I am so thrilled that I found it!

I poured over the very helpful posts on this site for hours and hours, and I finally settled on the Riva Ego. One poster had a link to a site where the Riva could be purchased, but they were sold out. So, I ended up on the Vaporroom.net after doing a search for Riva Ego. I watched a video they posted, read the information on the site, checked out their kits and what came with them, and I found them to be the lowest in price compared to some other sites I checked out. I ordered just a kit from them – it came with 2 batteries, 2 attys, 1 cone, 10 carts, 1 car charger, one wall charger, and 3 different juices! I placed the order on Thursday night, and when I got home from work on Monday evening, there it was!

I started the battery charging first thing, because I knew I needed to let it charge for 8 hours initially, then I could use it for 20 mins, then charge for another hour (this is the recommended procedure for this model per the enclosed instruction manual and the tutorial on the Vaporroom site). This morning was my first opportunity to actually use the Riva. I read and watched videos on dripping, so I had already decided I was going to do that instead of using the carts. I was able to select one of my flavors when I placed my order, and I had chosen Cherry because it’s my favorite flavor, and I figured after 20 years of menthol, a little fruity flavor might be nice.
I must say, I am absolutely 100% thrilled with vaping! Oh. My. Gawd! Why aren’t these cigs and juices the heralded heroes around the world? I totally understand about the lack of scientific testing, but the devices, juices, and accessories have been out for a pretty good while – the FDA or FBI or ATF or whoever could have “approved” these things by now! In fact, the only small concern I have about using these electronic devices is the lack of independent study and evidence of whether the juice, components, or atty action cause any health problems or not. But, I do know that smoking burning tobacco with all the chemicals is NOT good for anyone, so I’m taking the chance on vapors. But, I know the reality of tobacco lobbyists a-d kickbacks.

I wanted to thank the creator of the EFC site, and all the members/contributors for making such an informative and fun place to learn about vaping. Although I’m a newbie to this, I can already tell that it is going to satisfy my desire to “smoke.” I havealways enjoyed it in the privacy of my own personal space, and now I can vape without anyone knowing I’m doing anything. It’s odorless, there are no ashes or butts to deal with, and since you’re not burning anything, you don’t have to worry about being a fire hazard. Most fun for me is stealing a bunch of puffs at work, totally undetected!

I’ll post on here periodically as time passes and I gain more experience with the hardware, juices, etc. But, for now, I’m so thrilled to have a better way to do something I enjoy, without the worry of what other people think or say! Thanks!

Hey guess I'll join ya in the first posting aspect! Thx! I've been vaping for about 3 weeks on some sort of generic and love it, so I ordered both the Riva and the Ego and a ton more juice. Found I luv red bull LOLCigs should come today or tomorrow and I just can't wait...wish I didn't have to wait that 8 hours of charging. These will be my first manuals and I was really glad to see a thread on how they react different than the autos. This site is awesome and so very helpful. Thx everyone!:p

Welcome to ECF! I'm new here myself and thus far I've found it to be just a fantastic community full of really helpful people! By the way, I feel you on the "closet smoking" thing...I never admitted to anyone that I was a smoker- not even myself. I smoked a pack a day for 10 years and never bought more than 1 pack at a time because I always told myself that this was going to be my last pack. Every day. For 10 freaking years. LOL at my dumb ...!

Oh, and I started smoking with Cloves just like you. Samporna Extra or Djarum Black...but I digress, welcome to the forum!

I have been a closet smoker myself. I only smoked around my wife and her immediate family, but nobody else. I would cringe when I had obligations with my family, because I knew I would be suffering for more than 4-5 hours at a time. Sometimes I would come up with a good excuse to leave the area for awhile and then smoke a chimney.

A lot of good info here at ECF and a lot of great people are here too!

Welcome closetsmokr and glad you found ECF.
I do have to add here, if you smoked, most likely, someone, if not all, around you knew. It won't be long before you will smell the smoke on anyone who smokes. Actually I can walk past a house where someone is smoking and tell right away.

You are probably right, but, I guess out of sight, out of mind? Or, group-think mass-denial? LOL. I'll still be a closet smoker, I just won't smell like it!
