After much lurking and researching, I am now entering the posting realm. Here is some information about me:

PROFILE
My name is Dubdice, however I like to be called Dubba, too.
I am a young adult in Michigan.

SMOKING
I started smoking Jan 16, 2005, stopped May 1, 2010. I started at 18yo.
Marlboro Menthol to Camel Menthol to Marlboro Smooth.
Toward the peak of my smoking, I was at about 3/4 pack to a pack a day. This decreased to about 5 cigs a day (through no conscious effort)

I've never tried to quit and was initially drawn to e-cigs because it was "technological."
After using them for a few days, smoking seemed like kind of a stupid idea because I was getting the same ritualistic experience. I don't even look at a cigarette with longing.

vaping
vaping since May 01, 2010.
1st Kit Blu 306 starter kit.
2nd Kit 510 passthrough with cartomizers.
3rd Kit 510 megabatteries with chargers soon.
I vape 16mg PG. 18mg VG on the way to compare.
I am a customer of ElectroNicStix.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVES
General objectives have included:
Why do some people say e-cigs should be banned?
Where are e-cigarettes banned?
What States have e-cig legislation in place (any)?
Is there a correlation between certain factors and e-cig legislation?
Can future legislation be predicted based on those factors?
What are the components of e-liquid and vapor?
What are the studies and conclusions and risks of these components?
What are some studies, polls and statistics of vaping and vapers?
What are some studies, polls and statistics of smokers?
Who are the proponents and opponents of vaping? What are their opinions?
What are the arguments against vaping- do they have merit?
What are the arguments for vaping- do they have merit?
Who wins/loses if e-cigs are banned?

Questions such as these have led to 155,000 words of research (about 350 Microsoft Word pages). I'm not doing anything with it, I just sit and ponder it while adding to it daily.

One interesting thing I have found is that there are clear correlations between certain smoking statistics and the probability of e-cigarette legislation in a State. I have even comprised a list of all States by rank of "threat of legislation." New Jersey/New York are tied for 1st implying my formula is substantiated. By the way, Massachusetts is 3rd, so keep an eye on it.

I look forward to contributing to discussions on this board and posing some questions of my own. Long live vaping!

Dubba, (is the name a musical reference?) If you want to keep up with the current status of ecig legislation I found this site to be really handy for that. STOP electronic cigarette ban NOW
There's a list of states with the ones that have current legislation on ecigs red flagged.
For the rest of your questions go to the campaigning section of this forum. There are a lot of good people in there who are keeping up on all of this stuff very diligently. Campaigning - E-Cigarette Forum

MsSki, you don't have to tell me twice. Searching for anything returns about 100 pages of results ha.

Mist, the name refers to DoubleDice, a fictitious pimp I made up for a skit I did in high school. Ha! Not related to dubstep or dub house etc.

I am well familiar with Stop Ecig Ban Now- I used it to determine the state of e-cig legislation in the States. I assigned all States a "heat level":

Heat level 0 = no action taken for or against e-cigs
Heat level 1 = E-cigs illegal to minors OR adult ban proposed but overturned
Heat level 2 = Adult ban in discussion OR shipments experience trouble OR major State entities speaking out against e-cigs
Heat level 3 = Adult ban in effect OR similar serious attacks on e-cigs

I agree with e-cigs illegal for minors- but legislators can be sneaky, adult bans may be injected along for the ride. Additionally, it might be said that many States have reviewed e-cigs and have taken no action to ban them for minors. Evidence of this would lead to interesting discussion.

11 States out of 50 have heat level non-zero. I will post results of legislation meta-study when I have 5 posts.

Dubba,

I like this a lot. I also think it would be great to monitor research, esp. scientific journals regarding what is said about e cigarettes, what methods were use to determine conclusion, and if those conclusion are peer evaluated. Regarding your research objectives, I wonder if it is possible for you to poll minors asking them if they would try an electric cigarette if they see units sold or used and asking users of personal vapors, how they would react if a minor asked them to help purchase or use a personal vapor. I would like to see how you determined probability of e cigarette bans. Please pm me. Also, since you seem to be gung ho on researching this, I would love to consider you seeking publication of a final finding.

First of all, I would like to say thank you to all who have welcomed me onto ECF so far. I look forward to finally engaging in two-way comms regarding these life-saving devices.

I call both East Lansing and Ann Arbor my home equally. It's true that there are many Michiganders on this forum, but it's hard to connect with them. Is there any way to search for members based on State? I think it would be cool to make some Michigan vaping friends.

I have seen some opposition to vaping by some of my smoking peers. It is as though I think I'm "better than them" now that I'm "not smoking." Obviously not the case. This has become a topic of interest for me. According to an ECF poll, 92% of vapers on this forum are over 26. Odd, considering their appeal to the "digital" generation. I don't know, more investigating needs to be done.

Vappoem, you are on the right track in asking these questions. The relationship between minors and smoking goes deeper than we might think.

As far as your curiosity regarding legislation, here is some limited information I can throw at you regarding my meta-study of e-cig legislation State-by-State.

I compiled a spreadsheet of each State's cigarette statistics and cross-referenced it with the list of States with e-cig legislation (from STOP ECIG BAN NOW).

11 out of the 50 States have some form of e-cig legislation in place or in open discussion. The following ratios will determine a correlation between statistics and legislation status. Each statistic is given a "level" meaning (min + max) / 2. Counts of States above and below the level are noted.

STATE NAME
A-K: 6
L-Z: 5

Clearly there is no correlation between the name of the State and ECL (e-cig legislation)

ADULT SMOKERS (% of STATE)
LO: 10
HI: 1

ADULT SMOKERS (# IN THE STATE)
LO: 5
HI: 6

YOUTH SMOKERS (% OF STATE)
LO: 10
HI: 1

SMOKING RELATED DEATH (# PER 100,000)
LO: 10
HI: 1

SMOKE-FREE WORKPLACE LAW
YES: 8
NO: 3

SMOKE-FREE RESTAURANT LAW
YES: 9
NO: 2

SMOKE-FREE BAR LAW
YES: 8
NO: 3

MINIMUM PRICE LAW
YES: 5
NO: 6

TAX (DOLLARS PER PACK)
HI: 8
LO: 3

SIPP (STATE INCOME PER PACK)
TAX PER PACK x NUMBER OF SMOKERS IN STATE
HI: 9
LO: 2

These relationships show correlation between statistics and probability of legislation. Full report will be its own thread. In it I will also list the States by rank of threat.
