Please classify your first cigarette experience for my research- A Dubd1c3 Poll

Do you remember your first couple cigarettes?

  • It was gross, I coughed and face was flushed, but probably because I didn't know what I was doing.

  • It was gross/uncomfortable at first even though I believe I was smoking correctly.

  • It was weird, kind of like my body already knew how to interact with the smoke & chemicals...

  • I experienced immediate benefits which led to more frequent smoking very quickly.

I had my first cigarette back in 1974. That in itself isn't remarkable except for the fact that I was born in 1966. Yep. I was 8. My mom thought she was being smart by letting me try a cigarette. And it was a smart move...I got horribly sick. I coughed my brains out, I was sick to my stomach.

I didn't touch cigarettes again until 1979. That's when I started smoking for real. My first few tobacco cigarettes were pretty rocky, but I got used to it. I stayed with it despite the difficulties since I was already used to another type of cigarette (wink, wink).

First cig by age 9. I snuck it from my mother's pack and went off by myself to a nearby park and smoked it. So begins a lifelong pattern of sneaking off by myself for a smoke. I remember it was awful and I felt sick, didn't stop me though, hooked by age 13. I grew up on Army bases, you could get a pack out of a vending machine pretty much anywhere for less than 50 cents. My dad always had coins laying on top of his dresser.

I grew up with smokers, my mom smoked Lucky Strikes and my dad smoked cigars. Two of my brothers started smoking when they went in the service.

It didn't seem like anything out of the ordinary when I was in a play in college where my character smoked Kools on stage. That was my first experience smoking. I was 17.

I smoked Kools for years and then switched to other brands and even rolled my own for awhile. So glad to have discovered vaping as I really enjoy the act of "smoking".

I was about 8 years old. My mother, father, and sister all smoked. My grandparents smoked as did most of my aunts and uncles. My mom would send me to the store for her smokes...they sold to anyone in the 50's...and I remember they were $.25 a pack. The kids in my neighborhood would turn in pop bottle money and buy a pack and we would all go to the woods and smoke. As I grew older, I smoked more and more and more. I got up to 2 packs a day and smoked for well over 40 years....till May 2009 and all that ended!! :)

i started at twelve when i moved to bloomington ,IL.... started hanging at the skate park and really started to bum squares more reqularly ....but when i was alos about 13 i started buying packs....the maind reason i did it was because of my AD/HD meds the nicotine literaly made me high for an hour or more...that also led into pot...but thats a diffrent story...lolz

I was 18 and although I didn't really like the flavor or smell at first, it wasn't nearly as unpleasant as I expected so I chose "it was weird". I didn't start smoking on a regular basis until I was 20, however, and it was basically "peer pressure". I got a job in the tech industry and found that all the interesting people went outside to smoke on their break...eventually I realized I was smoking outside of those social situations and made my first of many quit attempts.
