Hello people reading. I'm a smoker that's trying to quit, I've tried quitting by vaping once before and it went pretty decent until I broke my tank. It was a Kanger Subox Mini, I went into a store and picked that one, I didn't read about it or ask questions. Sorta went...I got it, enjoyed it, dropped it and went back to smokes in 30 or so days.

Fast forward to now and I'm still spending around $350 on smokes a month and the wife around $200. It's just not working anymore, I'm sick of the cost, the coughing every morning, my parents both died of Lung cancer before 60 so I know the end game of smoking. Still I love it and that's why I want to vape.

So my better half and I went to a store last night. I've spent the last few hours watching youtube reviews, online site reviews, etc. It's down to the SMOK OSUB 40W Kit and the Smok Alien Kit. Basic advice I got at the store was go for the 40W kit and in a couple of months get the Alien. I'm trying to figure out if that's good advice or if I should just go for it with the Alien mod, future proof.

Well that's a tough one since you already know you like it you should get a mod like your old kbox with external batteries. The Alien mod is good but the paint comes off and the tank it comes with is overkill for someone starting up again. I would recommend the Pico kit, Evic VTC/Vtwo mini kit, or your old kit again (TopBox Mini now).

Just want to welcome you to the forums. Great support and information here so stick around and sit a spell. Hoping success for you and your wife this go around. I was spending about the same for smokes as you and it does get old rather quick. You'll find what works, just stick with it.

Interesting. So you left off SMOK OSUB 40W and I'm going to assume it's because of battery ? I know what you're saying about Alien mod. Way more beast than I need right now. My wife is trying to get me to go with that because of battery life and future using of the power. I dunno, I may go with the old one.

Thanks for the advice!

Just remember that just because the box has the power, doesn't mean you have to use it. For example, a 200w box would run your old tank about 5 times longer than that 40w box. Just as an example. A 100w would be about 2 1/2 times.. and I don't know about your preferences or how prone you are to shinyitis, (I'm like Golem at the vape shop... eyes wide, fingers on the glass.."precious..... my precious... will its make big clouds? Does its tastes good?") but it is cheaper to just buy bigger now than replace later, but then you do have a wife for your hand-me-downs. And of course, if you still have your old mod, you could just replace the glass part or tank, depending on what broke.

Yeah, internal battery mods you'll need two so you have something while other is charging. Unless you think you'll be a cloud chaser in the future you shouldn't need a 200w mod but if changing/charging batteries every day or two is a concern then a 2 or 3 battery mod may be for you. Generally with 20A batteries you want to use under 60w each so it's realistically a 120w mod. Changing batteries is fast and easy though and the Pico especially is tiny so they are better for the summer when all you have is shorts pockets to carry your mod in. Alien is to big and heavy IMO. Remember these giant tanks with 4-8+ coils are gonna drink your juice way faster then a single or dual coil. The coils for them are expensive too, they may produce 2-4x more vapor at the cost of 2-4x more juice but they don't produce 2-4x the flavour. I been vaping maybe 10 months, tried bigger/more coils maybe 3 weeks before going back to single coil builds.

The Smok Cube or Priv is a better mod IMO and the Helmet tank on the O SUB 40w sucks. Tiny battery too so thats probably why they recommended it, you'd go home, battery would die then you'd run back and buy a 2nd one lol. Vape Shops know most people just buy one mod and a few tanks at most and don't come back till it breaks so they'll try to scam every penny they can out of you.

You're gonna need at least two mods in the long run. (Need a reliable backup in case your primary breaks) Don't place yourself in the position to buy another pack of smokes just because your mod stopped working.

(Actually, you need at least two of everything you use -- mod, tanks, coils and e-liquid)

And if your mod uses external batteries, you should have at least two sets of batteries.

I use 2 married sets, and swap when I leave the house if the ones in the mod are at half or lower. I also use my toptank mini while watching tv and puff away. Only at 3mg so I can pretty much vape steady without getting nic sic.

I'm not sure I believe in 'future proof'

a) there's always new tech making old tech redundant (new ideas/materials)... 200w might be plenty powerful enough, but there will be new things in the future which can't be fixed with the so-called 'upgrade' (firmware) phenonmenon.
b) not many mods really lasts forever.. you can't stop a broken thread of bad wiring.... (not easily).

Either way, my money wouldn't go on Smok products if I was really trying to future proof.

I would have said the same thing last year, Smok mods were junk. They really stepped up their game this year though. A couple Joyetech AIO's maybe another good option depending on how much you want to spend or as a back up. With a 1 18650 mod you'll want 3-5+ batteries and a 2-4 bay charger. A 2 18650 mod you'll want 4-6+ batteries. Most likely looking at $100+ at a vape shop, 2 AIO's shouldn't be more then $40-50 and you'll have 2 tanks instead of 1.

Welcome and glad you joined. Best advice I can give is start simple and try to learn every basic part of vaping, then step up to advance ways of vape. Some folks inadvertently sell the novice advanced equipment which multiplies vaping complexities. The poor learner is flooded with too many variables and never gets the basics down pat. It helps to know what you want (which direction you want to head towards) before you make a decision you might regret after a purchase.
In General higher ohm coils/lower wattage (generally MTL) vaping will:
Heat the coil slower, which may produce “less” vapor
Provide A “cooler” tasting vape, can produce more flavor
May use less E-Juice (<$ less money)
Prolong battery life (<$)
Prolong coil life (<$)
Prolong wick life (<$)
May result in less PV maintenance/Issues
Less irritation to non vapers
Aids stealth vaping
May be better in the long run healthwise (<$)
