Just saying hi, I'm new to the forum and just looking for general information. I've been a Camel Light smoker for almost 20 years and am hoping to transition to something less toxic. I just bought a disposable from a mall kiosk (White Cloud) to try it out, but am trying to figure out the difference between all the types and brands. There is way too much information out there, lol. I've tried to go through some of the stickies and FAQs, but even that is a little overwhelming. Any advice for a newbie is appreciated!

Just my little biased opinion, feel free to try any of the disposables, but just remember going in despite the classy ads and promises of "at least two packs of regular cigs" the two are nothing alike. That said, disposables can be a good way of figuring out if you want to go further into ecigs, either a small cig look alike i.e joyetech 510, or something more robust, like the the ego. Congrats on giving ecigs a try.

Welcome to ECF.

Don't give up! Keep reading. You have to absorb a certain volume of info and it will "gel".

Basically, there's cig-a-likes (cig sized small batteries...short life and low power but small), larger "stock" batteries bigger and sometimes variable voltage so you can adjust the heat, and then there's a whole world of mods/APV's...often with replacable batteries and other features.

Then there's the "delivery device"...cartomizers, atomizers, clearomizers, whatevermizers, tanks, etc.

Just keep reading.

I won't recommend one starter kit over another yet because I don't know what you think you may be interested in. Look around a little. I'm sure there will be some recommendations ;). But read up and see reviews. There's a section for reviews off the main page.

Many people "start small" and keep their 1st kit as a backup if they chose to upgrade later. Also helps save $$$. Others "dive right in" and go for APV's right off.

Think about battery life, volume of e-juice held, costs, size.

Hello, MB73. Welcome to the wonderful world of vaping! If you're still in the beginner stages, maybe even if you're not, I would totally recommend an eGo-C starter kit that is available at My Freedom Smokes out of Charlotte, NC. I find MFS to be a really good site with quite a few different things for most stages of vaping experience. One advantage I found with the starter kit - besides the $15 price - is that the eGo-C battery is good for many different upgrade possibilities. I've gotten excellent service from them, and shipping times are really fast. He also has a good variety of ejuice - both flavored and unflavored - and a good variety of flavors to mix your own.

Welcome to ECF and a BIG congrats on the switch!!!

My 2 cents here. I was a former heavy smoker and every other breath used to be from an analog. Quitting was hard and i achieved little satisfaction from the Blu, NJoy, and other 'cig a likes' due to low battery capacity with a 'meh...' atty in their systems. Then i found myself bouncing back to analogs. Sorry to stomp on these types of ecigs but Id hate for anyone trying to quit and switch to just go back to analogs like I did.

Trying larger batteries with better tank systems gave me a much better satisfaction to keep me away from those killers. Like Attypops said, look around for the systems you prefer or feel free to let us know on here and we'll be more than happy to help you out.

Lots of reading and experimenting to find what works for you and what you like best. Good luck and welcome, if there is a local store, you might want to stop by, look things over, see in person, and discuss your wants/needs-a good local store with experienced vapers. Get used to watching youtube videos too. Some great advice from others already, have fun!

Welcome MB73,

You have had good advice from SpicySaffron, in my opinion.

I began as you did, with disposables... or the recharable version of them. I spent (wasted? probably not) some time and not too much money finding sources for cartomizers and additional pen style batteries. None of that stuff tasted especially good, or lasted very long.

I'm not interested in what my gear looks like to others, and as I don't see it while vaping, I have stuck to function in choosing what to use.

My wish list was pretty straightforward: A charged battery should last about a day or more, and the liquid/vapor source had to more or less keep up with the battery. I wanted a fair amount of vapor without having to suck hard or keep the thing going for ten seconds.

One of my kids gave me an eGo style clone, probably in the 650 mAh range. It charges in about 2 hours, and lasts all day. I was a pack a day smoker for decades. That should give an idea of how much I use the e-cig.

I bought three Kanger Protank IIs, as I'm really anxious not to return to cigarettes, and I like a variety of flavors to keep vaping interesting.

I alternate between strong, dark tobacco flavor and something much lighter, like green apple or lemon. That works for my tastebuds. Your flavor choices are almost limitless, so try quite a few, and find what you like.

Just ordered a larger, variable voltage eGo type fat pen-like battery, the Vision Spinner. I'll probably get a smaller Protank that's easier to carry around, and also some EVOD cartridges and a very small batteries to take when I'm out of the house.

This is all pretty simple, basic hardware. Once I've settled in with this stuff, I'll try rebuilding burnt out coils. Might even try mixing my own juice, but that's a few months down the road. For now, I'm getting my nicotine needs fulfilled with some nice flavors, and not obsessing at all about the hardware. I prefer not to make vaping a hobby. Rather, it's just a healthier, more pleasant way to deal with a habit/addiction. The longer term goal is to gradually reduce the nicotine content from 2.4 mg to something considerably lower, maybe even zero, but I'm in no hurry.

The people in these forums have been wonderfully friendly and helpful, despite the seemingly overwhelming jargon. I've asked for help and received great replies.

Thank you everyone! My disposable was a no go after just a couple hours - I was playing with it and bit through it, breaking the soft "filter" part and getting a mouthful of nicotine juice, lol. It did meet my nicotine needs, which was a good piece of information to have, but I didn't really like the taste. I think I'll start looking into the introductory rechargeables, either the 510s or the two-piece ones to start. Thanks, I'll keep reading! I have a 2 year old, and I'd like to be around for him well past his college graduation, so I need to get tar out of my life.
