As far as mech vs regulated - neither option is bad or wrong, a regulated mod is certainly a better starting point as it allows you some safety features to use as you learn to build on RBA/RDAs and you can also have it to use while you acquire the knowledge and equipment (Multimeter, Ohmmeter, proper batteries,etc) to go with the mech.
And for RBA vs RDA that is solely based on what will suit your personal needs better

As a new vaper I'd recommend you go with a regulated device, before moving up to a mech, there's a lot to learn with a mech as far as battery safety and ohms law and rebuilding. It's more of a hobby and not a just get off cig device, especially if you can't build a working coil you may be SOL.

Welcome jack! My story...I've been vaping about 5 weeks and started with the Evod. I've since moved up to an itaste MVP2 and Nautilus Mini. I have a couple of Pro Tanks coming that I'm going to start rebuilding for (along with my Evod tanks) when needed as an introduction to making coils. The MVP only goes to 11W and won't sub ohm below 1.3 but really all I want is flavor and a semi decent vapor cloud. The Nautilus mini gives me all that but I don't want to be at the mercy of having to buy coils for it forever. I'm sure I'll move up to a Kayfun type tank soon.
So, it all depends on what you want out of your vaping experience. BTW, the MVP is about as simple and dependable as mods get.

I went 5 months on a kanger mini pro tank 2 with a e go twist battery started rebuilding coils for it after a month or two of vaping.
Making the tiny coils got me ready to start making coils in a RDA (dripper) but found I didn't like my RDA till I took it sub ohm. on a mech.
Also found sub ohm eats e juice like crazy and 6mg juice hits like 18 mg I still use my mini pro tank on my mech.
So if you want to spend 10- 30 min making coils in a RDA's are awesome!
you do have to add drops every 5-15 puffs and if you don't use most of the juice up in the RDA it can leak out the air holes
Tanks you can just buy coils and change in a few sec. and they don't leak. great when your driving or running around.
Like I said i use both though when I go from my RDA to my pro tank I hate the feel of the tight air flow at first always feel like its clogged lol!

I'd recommend an MVP as well. It's a huge improvement over your current set up and won't break the bank. Pick up one of the Aerotanks or Nautilus at first and then you can work your way to a Kayfun or Taifun.
Hello & welcome! You've come to the right place since you're debating between a mechanical and regulated device. There's plenty of information to help you make an informed decision. I didn't try a mech until I'd been vaping for over a year. I just wanted to get off cigarettes and was happy with the cig-alike form factor. (we had less choice back then anyway) Now mechs are a staple in my collection, even if I don;t use them every day.
