I just joined the forums and wanted to say hello. I am happily married and have two children.

My son is 16 and still loves his mama. I loved to give him hugs and kisses in public places, especially in front of his friends. Lol A boy snickered once, and my son looked over at him and said, "What? You don't love your mama?" I got a good laugh out of that. Now, my hugs and kisses are expected. Most of his buddies expect hugs of their own. My son pushed for my husband and I to quit smoking. We have been vaping for 10 months now.

My daughter is almost five years old. She used to get miffed when we went out to smoke. vaping means I get to spend more quality time with my sweet girl. She wants to be a Mermaid when she grows up. ;)

I am preparing my home for a Congo African Grey. We are naming him/her Bailey, after Miranda Bailey from Grey's Anatomy. (African Grey....Grey's Anatomy lol) I had a Blue Crowned Conure when I was younger. He lived for 28 years. I owned him for the last 12. I know that smoking around a parrot is a health risk. I came here to learn more about any possible risks of vaping around Bailey. I know from experience, we will be changing our lifestyle to accommodate Bailey, not the other way around.

I look forward to meeting you all. Have a great day!

Welcome to the ECF!

This is a rather interesting question. I know cats are very sensitive to PG, and so you should avoid vaping high-PG juices around them (and don't give them access to your PG stash).

Birds however have really complex and effective respiratory systems. While they can't smell, I know that birds are highly sensitive to things in the air (like Febreeze or colognes). I would definitely say you should err on the side of caution here and avoid vaping around your bird. It might be a pain in the ..., and I'm sure other vapers vape around their birds without fear... I doubt anyone has a definitive answer (with scientific research) and I wouldn't want to risk losing a precious housepet.

Hello and Welcome Vaping Mama
I am going to say that it wouldn't be a good idea to vape near the bird.

These apparently have led to the death of parrots.
  • Teflon (heating of non-stick surfaces on pots & pans, ovens, even hair dryers)
  • Smoke (from cooking/burning food/cooking oil, cigarettes, burning candles)
  • Off-gassing from standard household cleaners (bleach, ammonia, pine cleaners)
  • Aerosol sprays (hair spray, perfumes, deodorants)
  • Natural Gas, Propane (gas leaks from furnaces, hot water heaters, camp stoves, & BBQs)

Smoke and fumes from olive oil are certainly potentially deadly to parrots and parakeets, my dad used to be a breeder when I was a kid. Long story short a family friend of ours kept losing birds mysteriously, she'd just find them dead in the house. Turns out it was every time she fried with olive oil.

Off topic, but aubergines are toxic to them too.

Wow! I have never heard this. I cook with olive oil all the time. This information definitely warrants more research on my part. Thanks for sharing. I will update once I learn more about olive oil being a possible risk factor for parrots.
