Hey all, I'm here looking for information for two of my loved ones. I'm not a smoker, so this is a confusing realm for me with the "vapor" and "throat hit" and other such words that I can't really relate to. lol

My 18 yr old son smokes and dips. He tried a disposable blu cig and hated it.... I'd like to find some more information to show him that not all ecigs are created equal, in hopes of getting him away from dip and cigs. I think he'll be pretty open and flexible to experimenting because he's young and still able to be swayed by the cool-factor. ;)

My 42 yr old bd has been promising to quit smoking since I got pregnant.... well, our son will be 2 on saturday so I don't think he's going to hold up that end of the deal.... our son was a preemie, so I understand why it was too stressful to quit when he was born. I'm ok (really I'm not, but its his right) with him smoking at work or out with friends etc... But I despise him smoking at home. He smokes outside or in the bathroom, but that makes our one and only bathroom off limits for at least an hour after he smokes OR he gets up 10 times a night to go outside and smoke. We can't watch a movie, a game or have a conversation without constant interruption to go smoke. I would really like to get him to agree to smoking an ecig at home and smoking whatever he wants when he's out. I only have one shot at converting him, so I need to find the closest formula to Newport menthols. If I don't get it right, he'll assume that they are all terrible and won't try it again.

Can anyone help me out on either?

You are very courageous being a non-smoker trying to hit that perfect vape with just one chance. I will not presme to suggest what juice would be what you are looking for but this site is a blog maintained by a professional chef who has the palette to discern almost all of the flavors present in the juices he has tested. He has no vested interest in the juice companies so I tend to give him props for what he is doing.

Hi and welcome! Congratulation on trying to help your family make the switch. I hope you don't mind if I rant a little bit about "cig-a-likes" (the small cigarette shaped batteries). I apologize for the length, I should probably blog this:

There is nothing wrong with using cig-a-likes. Most members, myself included, started out with them. Some people happily use them, but many people outgrow them in a short period of time.

Cig-a-likes are not exactly vaping. Not too long ago, I converted a friend. While talking to her recently I expressed an observation I had about new people vaping and she confirmed that (at least in her case) I was dead-on in my theory. Here’s the story:

She and I went out to dinner soon after I got my eGo. She found it intriguing . Then we didn’t see each other for a couple of months. When we hooked up again, she said she had gotten an e-cig and hadn’t had a cigarette in a month! She was very happy! I asked her what she got and she said a Blu. I snickered.

I went to her house about a week later to show her my gear. Over and over she stated how happy she was that she didn’t smoke anymore! How long she had been able to go without a cigarette! How it was so wonderful not to smell like smoke! How healthy she felt not smoking, and so on.

I handed her one of my little 650mAh standard eGos and waited with glee for her reaction. She took one drag and her eyes got the size of dinner plates. Not matter how good a cig-a-like is, it cannot compare to the flavor, amount of vapor produced and the easy of inhalation of a more powerful battery.

When we talked a couple of weeks later, I noticed that smoking was no longer a topic. There was no more “I didn’t have a cigarette in X-number of days” type of thing. Cigarettes had become a non-issue. Instead, we talk about flavors, different gear to try and which venders were having holiday sales. Vaping is more satisfying and much more fun than smoking cigarettes.

Our conclusion is that while cig-a-likes can help you get off of cigarettes you are still conscience that you are actively quitting smoking. I hope that makes sense. When you are thinking things like: I am using an e-cig to quit smoking; when I want a cigarette, I use an e-cig instead; I am using an e-cig to replace smoking there is effort involved. Smoking is in the forefront in your mind, as is the decision to use e-cigs to address the cravings. That is a lot of work. Vaping with good equipment is not a lot of work. It isn’t that you quit smoking as much as you find something more satisfying and forgot to smoke.

I have one thing to say that is going to sound negative. It's wonderful that you are putting effort into finding an electronic cigarette for them, but unless they decide to invest the time and effort themselves, it will never work. Aside from the Njoy King disposable, all e-cigs available for sale at Walmart, Walgreens, 7/11, etc., go up to only 18mg/ml of nicotine in their pre-filled cartridges, which is one reason why many might be dissatisfied with them.

I would recommend a starter kit such as this ( there are many other options; this is just my default recommendation for new vapers ), and a range of e-liquid strengths, including 24mg and 36mg liquid.
Your husband will probably have to try many liquids before he finds one he is happy with. I would recommend ordering sampler packs from a few different vendors. I can suggest one menthol juice which only reflects my own personal taste, and that is Menthol Ice by Halo E-liquids.

Good luck! I hope they will both develop an interest in e-cigs. Send them to this site to look around if they are willing.

Thank you very much for the link! I know I'm not going to be the most welcomed person on this kind of a board, I'm just trying to find healthier alternatives for my family.... whether they want them or not! lol :D

You are definitely welcome here! This board is all about alternatives to inhaling smoke.

That actually makes a ton of sense, and for my son I think could be a drawing force toward vaping... vaporing... vaponomizing??? I'm willing to bet that he could be drawn in by all of the different options. My bd on the other hand, I think its going to have to be more of a "I can't smoke, so this piece of crap will have to do until I go out" kind of thing. Old dog, new tricks... not so much. I may be wrong, but I doubt it.

Who knows? I smoked for 40 years and loved it. I had no intention to quit smoking, it happened accidentally after trying as e-cig.

Everyone is welcome here whether their interest in vaping is for themselves or their loved ones. Grudgingly I have to admit that the person who is presently smoking cigarettes needs to have at least a modicum of interest in improving their life by not smoking anymore. I was one of the lucky ones in that after 53 years of smoking analogs I was able to put them down for good the day I started vaping. I hope you are able to accomplish your goal for you and your loved ones.

I, like many, started out with the ecigs sold at local stores. While ok, the flavors are often poor, the vapor is weak, and of course the batteries don't last very long. The best cheap alternative would be disposables from quality online vendors like green smoke or V2 (not many flavors, but there are some other good vendors that do offer some variety). Those will give better flavors and vapes than the stuff you will find at your local Walgreens or Walmart. Of course the ultimate is buying e liquid from quality vendors and filling your own cartomizers. Yet the investment will be higher, and even then you have to find something they like.

Best of luck. In the end, if they don't want to stop what they are doing they probably won't be open to something new. I personally quit smoking for about 10 months, but I still had cravings and I was afraid I would go back unless I found a better alternative. Vaping worked out great and I actually prefer it.

My mother recently started vaping and claims she has quit..... of course in my 38 yrs of life I'm pretty sure she has said she's quit smoking at least 50 times! I'm hoping that she truly has... and maybe if grammy is cool enough to vap, my son will get in on it too lol. I think hers was a lower end product, my son has had a hit off of it before and said it didn't do anything for him.... I don't know what level of nic she had in it at the time etc.. But I think if we experiment with a few products that my son could actually be happy with vaping. I need to direct him to this site so that he can ask his own questions and find what will suit his particular desires.

Bd will be a harder nut to crack. I have to almost hit the sweet spot... or very close to it.... on the first shot. A very very daunting task. I appreciate all of you jumping in to lend me a hand and send me in the right directions!!

Hello and welcome! It's great that you are trying to help your family. And I think it's incredibly open mined of you to understand that not all ecigs are created equal! The ones from gas stations, etc., really are...well... sucky for lack of a better word. It did not take me long to get frustrated with them and go back to cigs. But when I got my first ego kit, a whole new world opened up.

I would try starting there with your son in mind. Perhaps get a couple of ego batteries and a charger, a couple of atomizers and refillable cartridges, a couple of cartomizers, and maybe a small clearomizer, all in his favorite colors. Get a few little bottles of juice you think he would like. Since he's young, and ecigs are new and fun, you may be able to get him into it first. So get a few options that he can play with. Make sure all the options have say 501 in the title so that they are all compatible. If he likes them and gets into vaping, then perhaps your other family member will take a little interest. A little interest may be all it takes!

Good luck!

Thanks everyone, I approached bd tonight about using an ecig at home and continuing to smoke regular cigs at work and when out with the boys. I thought he would refuse, but he actually shocked me and agreed to give it a try!!! I'm thrilled and I really hope that he grows fond enough of it to gradually replace his regular smoking with vaping. Thank you all for the information and support. I'll still be lurking here collecting more info so that we know where to start and what to get.

I am so thrilled I'm doing a little happy dance!

Do not make the mistake I did, and purchase a cig-a-like kit. Do not. Start with the tanks, and the e-go kit. I had smokers who were trying out my mod today, whose eyes got bigger than a dinner plate when they took a hit off of it. They were amazed as to the strong throat hit mine produced, and I had one guy (a blu vaper, turned smoker), in awe and amazement. And you are more than welcome here, you are in the right place to get any information possible. This fourm is all about vaping, and harm reduction through vaping!

Your best bet here is the same as I used to convince my g/f 3 weeks ago. I ordered them and when they arrived she was a bit miffed. She didn't want to quit while I have been ready for a year or so.

I told her we weren't quitting we were just "changing brands" and she could have a smoke as often as she wanted as long as she gave it an honest effort. It's not about how many smokes you have it's about how many you avoid. She reluctantly agreed to give it a go and hasn't had a smoke since her first vape. 3 weeks today. Just be willing to invest in a decent kit (Mine was an Ego C and Vivi Nova tanks) and some flavors you know they will like (Get a tobacco and some food flavors you know they really enjoy)

This won't work for everyone but to my suprise it worked extremely well for my very strong, stubborn g/f.

Well besides the device I would get them into the idea itself. This is where youtube videos come in handy. Watch since device reviews on things like the ego, provari, etc and let them see the things actually work as intended.

Sometimes just seeing someone they might associate with using them is enough to break the barrier and then it's up to the device to win them over. It does require the desire to quit so that motivation will have to be brought on by you and others.

I'm super shocked that he has agreed to give it a try!! I thought he'd hold out and refuse. I'm on board with him continuing to smoke what he wants in his "spare" time or at work, I just want him to switch at home because I grew up with parents that smoked and hated it and now live with a man that smokes (yeah, I knew he smoked when we met) and I hate it... I hate it even more now that we have a child together. I raised my older 3 children "smoke-free" and don't like the fact that my youngest is exposed to it by the smoke in the bathroom trick or the smoke in the storage closet (where the air handler is, so it circulates through the house anyway... nimwit) trick.

Now I/we need to find him the right set up to make it something pleasurable so that he will continue to vape at home and find it as relaxing as he finds his Newports and Bud Light. lol At the end of the day, I want him to enjoy doing this.. not just suffer through it until morning when he can go to work and have a cigarette.
