Hi, I'm new to vaping and looking to make my own e juice, preferably 100% vg based. I'm a DIYer whenever I can be, if I can save a little money by doing something myself I will. So I thought it would be perfect to learn to make my own e juices. My main reason for joining is to learn more about making my own flavorings and sweeteners, what's safe to add and what's not. Thanks I advance to everyone for any advice you can give.

Hello and welcome to ecf. With vaping, there are many ways to save money. DIY your e-liquid is one way and learning how to make your own coils is another. I have to admit that 100% may not be able to wick properly so you might have to thin it with a bit of distilled water.
More info can be found in our DIY section - DIY E-Liquid
For learning about rebuildable tank check out our Rebuildable section - Rebuildable Atomizer Systems
If you have any questions just ask away.

Thank you for that information. I was planning on using 100% vg to start because I already have quite a bit and it is cheap and easy to find in the grocery store. I'm not really sure where to find pg or what the cost is, but I'm on a very tight budget at the moment and have to start out by using what I have on hand already. Can you possibly point me in the right direction for info on making my own flavorings concentrates, not flavor mixing recipes, but extracts to make my own flavor?

VG/PG are dirt cheap. Nic is probably what will end up costing the most, even then its still fairly inexpensive. Flavors are pretty cheap too.

I'm not sure about making your own flavorings, but from what I've read, most require them to be made in PG, probably due to how viscous VG is. I've read, and have been debating using coffee grinds, the others I've read are vanilla's, spices, some fruits (sugar will wreck coils though).

If you decide to buy some PG/Nic/Flavors, you should add a location to you profile so people can help you easier depending on where you live.

What about extracts used for baking, such as vanilla or almond? I've read that almond oil is not good, but somewhere I also read that food extracts can be used if properly diluted.

Extracts are suspended in alcohol ... and I'm not sure how that translates into being able to vape it. I'll defer to one of the more seasoned DIY'ers for that. Pretty sure any oils are a no no (I could be wrong though)

You didn't mention what you're using for a setup, either ... I think that will matter if you plan on vaping pure VG as @Diver9543 already mentioned, it may not wick properly.

I am currently using jomo lite 40s. I was figuring on probably having to thin the vg out with distilled water, it would be helpful to know what ratio of water to vg. Another flavoring possibility I had considered... (I work for Dunkin donuts) and we have sugar free flavor shots we use in our beverages, I checked out the ingredients and it doesn't seems like they would work okay based on my research up to now. The ingredients listed are: water, propylene glycol, sucralose and natural and artificial flavors. Any thoughts on this option?

Again, would I would defer to the more seasoned DIY'ers on these questions. Propylene glycol is fine, so is sucralose (will gunk coils), most flavors are natural and artificial (I'm not sure the if ones you're talking about are safe), but the water might pose a problem ... there's really no way to tell how much water is there.

Welcome to ECF!

As mentioned, the DIY forum is the best place for these questions as the folks there have a bit more experience. I would advise extreme caution on using flavourings meant for food. Inhaling things (even very small amounts of things) is not the same as eating them. One thing I can say for certain is to avoid anything with even a trace of oil. Inhaling oil can lead to a very nasty type of pneumonia.

As for the flavour shots, propylene glycol is PG and glycerin is VG, so no problems there. The problem is the 'natural and artificial flavours', which can be just about anything. Also, if the sucralose kills your coils too quickly, you can eat up much of your savings buying coils. Have you thought about looking into rebuildables?

PG costs about the same as VG (i.e. not much). While it is possible to make juice without PG, PG is a better flavour carrier and would probably be what you'd want to use for homemade extracts. If you hop over to the DIY forum and tell them where you're from, someone will be able to tell you where to find it.

Good luck, and vape safe.

No NO no on the extracts, sorry. With a few notable exceptions (some teas, coffee, nicotine) you should NOT use home extracts. Please don't. If you visit the DIY forum and some DIY vendors you will find about 1003 vanilla flavorings that are safe for vaping.

As long as it's USP you can get PG lots of places. Cheapest (probably) will be DIY vendors.

Also, PG is a flavor carrier. It's also less "sludgy." Seriously I started out max VG and then found a good (safe, flavor carrying substitute) that I am not sensitive to, (I can't vape more than about 10% and my mixes got SO MUCH better.

"Having a bunch around" is not a good reason to use max VG, and you won't save money by raiding your spice cabinet I am afraid, it will cost you in lung function.

Hope you get good assistance over there! DIY does NOT save money in the startup costs. To do it properly (at least to start) you are going to need more than vanilla extract and some VG.

Thanks for the advice, I have looked it up and found out just how cheap the commercial flavors are, at least online, I'm wondering if they can be found at local retailers as cheap.
Welcome and glad you joined.
Very, very few (like one or two flavors/enhancers) in my experience.

You’re in the right place then. We have a very active and friendly group of DIYers on the e liquid sub forum.
