Help- cotton keeps burning

I just started back into drippers as I did not care for them when I first started vaping, now it's my favorite. Looking at some the pics I was wondering about the height of the coils from the deck and cotton amount. 0dBu pic looks extremely high to me, or is it the pic? Is closer to the deck better for any reason?

I've been keeping mine fairly close as I thought it would wick better, but it does get hotter faster. Also seems like quite a bit less cotton works better compared to an rta. Using more cotton seems to work against me because it just leaks juice when not in use while using less seems fine after I vape it all. I didn't notice any difference with a bed of cotton or using tails to deck.

As far as the height, I would say its a personal preference. In the pictures of my coils for example, I have them set at around 5 mm from the posts and the bottom quarter of the coil can barely be seen from the outside of the rda through the air hole. ( it's slightly higher than the air hole. ) So air comes up and around the coil.

Cotton wise, I normally go for a little loose friction. Easiest way is to prep both strips and make sure they match up. I personally just let them touch the deck and pool about 1/4 inch of material on the deck.
