So tonight my wife and I were talking about me starting my PV (still en route to my house) and she seems to think this will be, 1. a quick transition, and 2. a temporary thing. She told me that vaping was healthier than smoking but still not healthy. I don't know how to explain to her that the point of this is to drop the smokes but if I do that, I don't care if I EVER stop vaping. She is supportive of this new idea, but I'm not sure she really understands it.

So how do I explain to her about vaping, and are there any particular threads that explain this well? I have been reading on here for awhile so I'm not just trying to get you guys to look everything up for me. I have a few threads saved that I am going to have her read shortly. Any advice would be great! Thanks!

I have been at this for 3 years. I have thought of quitting vaping, but I have seen whats happens when I get really PO'd or stressed @work - I start thinking about bumming a smoke... I mean I smoked for 30 years!!!

Anyways, you asked for advice, and for whatever it's worth, here is mine:
I don't think there is anything to explain to her... Take it one step @ a time. Get your kit first, learn to use it, then go from there. Find some e-liquids you like, and vape it. Eventually you may decide on a serious mod/APV or something like a tank or rebuildable. You may decide to lower nic and stop vaping eventually, you may turn it into a PV collecting hobby... just no telling, cause there is a whole world you are just learning about...

Best of luck to you on your trip!!!

I have the same problem with my father, who I work with every day. He simply says that I dropped one habit for another. I have stopped trying to explain it. He is too thick-headed to prove a point to anyway. I know that I stopped smoking and am healthier for it. If that is not enough for him then I don't what else to say.

It is hard to get through to some people. Vaping is simply harm reduction. I am not sure you will find anything to prove to your wife that it is 100% safe. I do not know of any study done so far that proves this. There are studies that show it is less harmful by MANY degrees. Explain to her that you are not looking for a perfectly safe alternative but rather an alternative that does not introduce thousands of known toxins into your system. That is all that vaping has been shown to do at this point, as far as I am aware.

I agree you may just have to show her, when you stop smelling like an ashtray and when you can take a wicked deep breath without weezing or coughing. it may be all she needs to see.

In its simplest form vaping is taking a nontoxic liquid containing trace amounts of nicotine and turning into a steam like vapor which does not damage the lungs, and does not contain some of the 4000 chemicals found in cig smoke. what it does do is calm our craving for nic without offending others, or cause varied health conditions..while maybe not the type of link your hoping for I can offer this one i was turned onto that explains what we arent getting from vaping :http://www.v2cigs.com/blog/2012/03/are-e-cigs-safe-a-cigarette-comparison/

vaping has changed my life while not unhealthy in the physical sense, I was a 2 PAD smoker for 35 yrs and even when my chest hurt i STILL lit a cig someone turned me on to vaping and I couldnt believe there was something no ANY product on the face of the earth that could make me forget about my cigs. approx 8 months later I feel wonderful. everything tastes so good my cloths, car, house and hair no longer stink, theres not ashtrays and ashes everywhere, I no longer need to run out in the cold, rain or whatever to go buy anouther cig. vaping has changed mine and many others lives for the better.

Thanks all. I guess you are right. I'll just have to start and experiment while learning as I go. I plan on keeping track on the money I have spent on vaping, as well as the money I would have spent on cigs (about 5.50/day). I think that'll motivate me, and saving money in the long run will make her happy too.

Me and the wife quit on the same day. She went cold turkey and I started vaping. It was mostly for money reasons. About a month later she was one to quit vaping as well. I just told her she can spend the same money on crap that I spend on vaping. Also I said I'd start smoking again so that shut her up. Haven't heard a thing about it in two months.

as long as you can keep the gear fetish in check you will be amazed at the money saved. then once you have some time and experience under your belt you can invest in some of the DIY stuff and it gets even cheaper.. like why buy liquid for 14 a bottle when its 3 to make it. why buy an atomizer head for 3.00 when you can make it for 0.30

I am a vaper with a non vaping/smoking partner. I did try to explain it to him, he was resistant to what I was doing. I didn't tell him it was to stop smoking tobacco, just an alternative for me.

When he realized that I had stop smoking tobacco, his attitude changed and he is now very supportive of what I am doing. He has the benefits of me not smelling like an ash tray and the better health I now have, hopefully your wife will see this with time too.

Hopefully she will take the time to read some of the stuff I find on here. I just think in her head that I will be done with everything by Christmas or something. She is a non-smoker, and I know she will be thrilled if I stop smelling like a stale bowling alley. Maybe she will just jump on board. Anyone else in a similar situation? How does your SO/family member feel about it?

good news, she sounds supportive, but skeptical.
How i put it to people, is that i have switched lol. Granted vaping is not as healthy as inhaling nothing, but cold turkey is just not an option for some of us. I tried cold turkey, patches, gum and made it 1 stinking day! So, IMO, you may begin being a chain vaper, then if you are set on quitting it all, you might, but most of us continue, b/c we like it.
this thread is a decent example of both sides of the story....http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/new-members-forum/346619-hobby-vs-means-end.html

If you want an easy way to track your savings from cigs, click on the banner in my sig, and set up your own.

As Thrasher said, just don't go hog wild chasing after every device, attachment, or juice, and you should be fine.

Your wife will be very happy with your.....erm.....improved blood flow and stamina. Ahem.

Uh, I think I get your meaning... And I will be happy because I won't have to time my smokes on the off chance! ;)

Non-smokers who have never smoked find it difficult to comprehend the addictive nature of smoking and usually secretly, or vocally, wish you would "just quit". It does sound like your wife is supportive which is great. Just jump in and show her what a great improvement it is over the stink bombs.:headbang:

My family has been very supportive and happy I quite the fire stix. I am glad for that.

here, there and everywhere
Trying to get them to understand is a tough one BUT my better half loved the fact there was no more "stink", no more kissing an ash tray, no more "breaks" to go outside and smoke wherever we went, and no more fights over me smoking in the car.

He does say that I have to be getting more nicotine than cigarettes. Right now, he is probably right. It's all new and I LOVE the flavors of the ejuices vs. cigarettes so I vape a lot. I can't say "right now" I haven't saved money. My only response to that is, well I can stop doing this and go buy cigarettes again, it shuts him up lol I can say once the newness wears off, I will definitely save the cost difference of cigarettes vs. juice and in medical bills! In my opinion, it is trading one addiction for another "hobby", just healthier :)

My kids are thrilled that I traded my "...." lol for the nasty cigarettes. They didn't think I would ever quit smoking. I have done it since the day my daughter was born. Within 3 days of vaping, I was done with cigarettes!! Good luck to you!

Greetings, welcome and good luck with your quest...

Not tasting like an ashtray was enough for my gf to be supportive. She even said I could vape in her house. LOL

And though we hate to admit it. Vaping is a little odd... We short out a battery across a fabic swap and boil nicotine juice and inhale it...

But dang if it ain't a lot of fun... :p

Thanks alot Tiffany. I read that whole thread and found it very comforting. I feel like I'm going to be doing the same thing... starting as a means to lower/quit analogs, but get sucked into the whole community of vaping. I was looking at the thread "heres a picture of my setup" and I have been drooling over some of the things on there.... AND I DON'T EVEN HAVE MY PV YET!

Actually, I have seen several studies that have shown that the amount of nicotine in ecigs is comparable to patches, which is significantly less than cigarettes. Even if you chain vape 36mg juice, it's not nearly as much nicotine as a cigarette. Of course, absorption of nicotine is not measured, so who knows how much actually goes into the system and how much is expelled in the vapor. Still awaiting the results from the FDA.

I've heard it both ways, space. Some say you absorb less because vapor doesn't get into your lungs as deeply as smoke (it's a particle size thang) and others say that the vapor, being an alcohol, passes the nic off more easily than smoke. I donno but I do know that I have to vape a LOT of 12mg juice to "feel" it getting to be too much.
