Hey everybody I joined the forum to ask for some advice. I am not a smoker myself so I really don't understand the importance of most of the factors involved with smoking. My Great Grandma has been smoking since she was thirteen, she is now eighty-seven. She smokes Winston Lights and about five per day. She stays at home all the time so I don't know that battery life would be all too important as she is always near outlets she could charge at. She doesn't usually smoke a whole cigarette in one sitting, she usually smoke a bit, puts it out, then smokes the rest of it later on. She always says that she is a mouth smoker rather than a lung smoker, I guess that means she smokes cigarettes like a cigar? We are trying to get her to quit so something that could help with this is what we are going for. If any of you guys or gals out there would be able to help me in picking the right product I would greatly appreciate it. If I need to give any more information let me know, thanks!

I'm sorry and will no doubt take some flack for this but... please... she's 87 years old and enjoys smoking. She doesn't smoke that much... certainly not enough to do her serious harm. Just leave her alone and let her enjoy her life. I used to smoke two packs a day and when I got down to under 5 a day and had my first doc appt they tried to talk me into smoking cessation classes... geeeeez. That's a full blown ideology operating. Years ago studies were done and doctors agreed that under 10 cigarettes a day was the same, physically, as not smoking. Cigarettes have changed since then with flavorings and chemicals but I still say let her enjoy the small pleasures she has left to enjoy at such an advanced age. She doesn't even smoke a whole one at once so she knows what her body can handle.

oooops... lost my connection... anyway

If you do get her vaping instead all well and good but if not.....

I agree with you, is why my first suggestion is to talk to her!

At that age it could be a very real issue with fires, falling asleep and such. Might be safer for her if she does vape.

I agree with letting her smoke and enjoy.

but the fire issue is a big concern . one thing I LOVE about vaping is I never have to go back in the house or get out of bed to make sure I put the cigs out.....or worry the whole time I am gone.

I've gotten people to try vaping by telling them to do it when they can't smoke (although I realize your GG stays home.)

Well at 87 years old ,the main reason for quitting just isn't there anymore and she has been smoking long enough that it is a main part of her life that will never change ?? my mom is that way at 66,even with her 92 yr old mother there pushing her,no success

i'd suggest just getting few different flavors loaded up,,explain them to her and leave them for her to try out, and leave it at that

I can kick your gramma!............ oh wait think i read the title wrong

J/k

HA!! I was thinking the same thing.
But, OP I am in the same boat. Just a few hours ago I ordered a Volt for my mom for Christmas. She has never used an e-cig before so I wanted to get her something that would look relatively familiar to her and seemed relatively simple. A lot of the products out there that I might have chosen for myself simply look too intimidating (even if they are relatively simple to use). So I didn't get her one of those just to remove one more factor that may cause her not to use it. Anyways, hope this helped, and my best advice to use is just to read as much as you can around the forum, don't pressure your grandma, and if you get her something make sure it is simple; unless of course she is looking for a new hobby. Good luck!!

One thing I think you absolutely must consider starting her vaping is that YOU fully understand vaping. You said she only smokes part of a cigarette when she smokes. This means she only takes small doses at a time. I don't know what kind she smokes but a full flavor cigarette contains 9mgs of nicotine of which the body only absorbs 1 mg and that takes time as much of it is absorbed from the tar on the lung. To start her vaping with anything over say 1mg nic juice would be, to my mind, dangerous especially considering her age so you will have to go to specific vendors offering doses below 6mgs (the usual low). Nicotine raises blood pressure and causes the heart to race so just make sure you fully understand all the ramifications and educate her fully also... ie: don't let her chain vape and for sure only give her 3ml sizes if you're in doubt about her understanding.

I don't think ayone is ever too old to try something new and interesting.
Like some others I'd suggest getting her some Smokeless Image Volts.
They have a light ciggish weight, feel very nice in the hand, and will be easy to use. They have automatics - all you have to do is take a draw, and manuals - click a button. Not knowing your great grandma I can't say which she'd like better - I'm guessing the automatics.
I'd also suggest the 78mm Volts. here's a pic, showing the two cig sized Volts, and the larger cigar-sized Volt X2s:

Click pic for bigger view

Another thing would be to ask her what color she'd like - does she want it to look like a cig or would she like her favorite color?
A 78mm Volt will last about 2.5 hours of vaping time. For some-one like her that would last several hours because she would use it intermittently throughout the day. Get at least two batteries - so if one needs charging the other one is available.

I'd recommend getting some sample packs with that. These are prefilled cartomizers with different flavors. Then she can try different ones and re-order the flavors she likes. Cartomizers juts screw on to the battery and a cartomizer and battery set up is the easiest way to start and enjoy vaping.
Here's a link to the Smokless Image site for you:
Smokeless Image | Only The Best Electronic Cigarette | Smokeless Image Electronic Cigarettes - The Future is in your hands

The starter kits are here, and the prefilled cartomizers are here. Scroll down to see the sampler packs. I'd suggest a strength of 12 mg and maybe get some in 6mg nicotine. Having both gives her another option.
I own some of these myself, and they have helped me quit a long time 40-50 a day smoking habit.

Right now there is a holiday sale and the coupn code MERRYVOLT for 20% off. You can use coupon code 10VOLTECF for 10% off anytime. They have a very good reputation here on the forum also.
Hope that's some help for you. Good luck with it.

The problem is she doesn't live in her own home, she lives with my family and I and we are all non-smokers that hate the smell, let alone having to be around smoke when going outside. She has also developed this cough within the last few months and the doctors want her to try and kick the habit.

That was a very good point about the physical effects of nicotine, thank you for that insight.

I found this on groupon and it looks like a good deal, but I only want to buy a product that will be satisfying...the problem is that I have no clue what the desired traits are as a smoker.

Thank you all for helping me out on this, I keep hearing about Volt, I take it they are a good product choice?mI ask because in all the searches for reviews most sites seem to have a commercial appearance and read as if they are more product placement.

Volt has good customer service, with a good product and good prices. They are also forum suppliers here which means ECF keeps checks on what they are doing and they are held to high standards, so you are not risking being ripped off.
