I've been vaping for over a year now and just recently got into rdas iv had my athena squank mechmod and rda for about a month and a half and everything was going fine I was chucking clouds and just recently this last build has been harsh like more then usual its harsh every hit and I've been using 3 mg nic since I started never changed it's a dual coil build 0.3 ohms using a single 300mah 3.7v imr 18650 battery

Before doing anything else try turning the watts/power down and slowly work it back up. Sometimes coils just take longer to break in. Did you wash you hands before handing the coil and the wicking when you built this last one? Sometimes something on your hands can transfer to either one and the taste is off.

Do you have another bottle of juice you can try? It's not beyond the realm of possibility you got something other than 3mg juice, even though it's labeled as 3mg. Also, could be something up with a specific batch or bottle of juice you got. Do you have another dripper to try it with? Or a completely different bottle of juice?

Also possible you got something on your cotton, or unclean cotton when you wicked it. I wash my hands before handling my cotton, and have a pair of scissors that are dedicated specifically to cutting cotton for wicking.

This happened after you rebuilt with new coils? Have you checked the resistance to make sure nothing is up with the build itself? Did you pulse the coils to burn any residue off before wicking?

May be stupid questions, just trying to throw some ideas out there.

LOL. I don't think those are stupid questions. Sometimes the placement of the coil can throw the taste off too. If its too high or too low, or even too much wicking(altho that usually results in dry hits).

I've been vaping for over a year now and just recently got into rdas. I've had my athena squank mech mod and rda it's a dual coil build 0.3 ohms using a single 3000mah 3.7v imr 18650 battery
Are you using the Samsung 30Q 3000mah 15A, Sony VTC6 3000mah 15A, LG HG2 3000mah 20A, or some off brand rewrap 3000mAh batteries? Bottom line...what's the amp rating (continuous discharge rating) of your batteries?

A coil resistance of 0.3 ohm will have a 14 amp draw, assuming that is the overall resistance and not two 0.3 ohm coils (for a total resistance of 0.15 ohms).

The Sony VTC6 and Samsung 30Q are 15 amp batteries, which is kinda pushing the limit for a 0.3 ohm build. Way over the limit if a 0.15 ohm build.

* "Manufacturer's CDR is 15A. The Samsung 30Q datasheet (Section 7.9) mentions operation at 20A. Operation at that level can be done as long as we don’t let the battery get above 75°C, its maximum rated operating temperature. This holds true for the Sony VTC6 battery as well. These are not a high performance “power” cell, designed for high current. They are a high capacity “energy” cell designed for low to moderate power levels and long running time. At higher current levels the voltage sag and power loss in the cell are huge. Do not exceed 20A". - Battery Mooch

Samsung 30Q 3000mAh 18650…a great 15A/20 battery!

Sony VTC6 15A 3000mAh 18650…a fantastic 15A/20A battery!

1) You have too much cotton in there.
2) Your coils are in too close to the center.
Move your coils out closer to the edge and raise the coils up so you can see the botton 1/3 of the coils through the top of the airflow. Trim the tails of your wicks so they just touch the bottom of the deck. Dry fire you coils and make sure there are no hot spots and they fire evenly from the middle out. Also make sure your cotton is not too tight in the coils. You should have resistance pulling the wicking through the coils without moving the coils. The airflow needs to be able to flow around the coils.
As mentioned dual .3 ohm coils should ohm out to .15 ohms. Make sure you have good quality batteries. Personally I use Samsung 25R batteries in everything.
I hope that helps.

Those coils are .3Ω EACH. Two coils halves the resistance. ~.15Ω.

Please don't not build on a mech without a way to check resistance.

Do you have a way to check the resistance of your mounted coils?

Cheers

Good pickup, Izan. :thumb:

@That1guy223 If each coil is 0.3 ohm, then using two together results in a total resistance of 0.15 ohms!

I can't identify what 3000 mAH orange batteries you are using from the pic, but they are not a Samsung, Sony, or LG. They must be a Chinese battery rewrap, so who knows what amp rating they really are?

Please read Are You Using a Rewrap (Rebranded or Aftermarket) Battery?

@That1guy223 , if you don't have a way to measure coil resistance, stop using your mech mod. The batteries that you are using are inadequate and dangerous to use with your current build, so you need to get better batteries. You also need to get an ohm reader to measure your coil's resistance. Premade coils are often not accurately rated, and need to be measured for accuracy before firing them on a mod.

Teach yourself how to use an Ohm's Law calculator and learn about which batteries are safe to use for the coil builds you use. Read these blogs and if you have ANY questions please ask before proceeding further.

I wouldn't be using those on that Athena or any mod with an 18650. .15 is in the neighborhood of 30A. It's harsh because those coils are putting you in the neighborhood of 100W. I would stop using those immediately. That is cutting it close with 20S or VTC5A batteries. It's flat out dangerous with basically any other 18650 especially an unknown rewrap. As for the squonk, I personally do not trust the Athena. I would recommend a Pulse BF. You can get one for $20 or less online. It accepts 20700s or 18650s, which will allow access to a wider variety of high amp batteries. Or better yet a Pulse 80W which is regulated and protected to keep you safe while learning.
