hi im new to the build your own concept of it and i need a crash course on everything like what's a good battery, atomizer, what's a clearomizer, and basically EVERYTHING there is to know. help please? :)

There is one hard thing with this question. We know nothing about if your smoking habits and if you smoke at all. Also how much your going to use your ecig? Where? Why you have the desire to get one? There is SOOO much custom stuff for ecigs and mods that it would be like going into the grocery store and asking someone to pick your food out with your eyes closed. Do lots and lots of research and get some really specific questions. Im tryin to help you save some money too because people could easily tell you to buy the most expensive stuff, and it may not be what you need. I can give you one example of my experience :) I bought a genesis style rebuildable atomizer because lots and lots of people said its the best.. turns out I hate it and wasted my money :(

Small sized batteries fire the heating elements which turns the nicotine liquid into vapor. The heating elements are called atomizers and are in various forms of juice carrying devices. Below is a link to a picture dictionary of the more commonly used juice carrying devices:

http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/cartomizers/343294-proper-terminology-carto-tank-what-lol.html#post7562212

Batteries are rechargeable. The cigarette-sized batteries only last 3-4 hours per charge, so at least 3-4 are required if you choose to use this size. More recommended are the larger eGo-class batteries, which are sized more akin to a long cigar. These will last 6-13 hours per charge, depending upon the mah rating. A 600 mah battery will last 6 hours, a 1300 mah battery will last 13 hours. 100 mah is equal to 1 hour vape time. This size battery also has more options for juice carrying devices. At least 2 of these batteries is required.

Smokeless Image is a vendor that sells both classes of batteries very popular with beginning and intermediate vapors. These are 808-threaded devices. All of their equipment is compatible with both batteries and they also sell nicotine juice. For beginners who desire to use pre-filled cartomizers they are available. For those who would like to save money and fill their own juice carriers, bottled flavors are also available. Other manufacturers use the more common 510-threaded devices. Below are recommendations for a mid-level eGo battery setup:

Batteries:
eGo Twist: AltSmoke.com | Personal Vaporizers | Electronic Cigarette | Ecigs | AltSmoke.com | eGo-C Twist Battery
or
eGo Spinner: AltSmoke.com | Personal Vaporizers | Electronic Cigarette | Ecigs | eGo Spinner Variable Voltage Battery

Charger: To recharge the eGo batteries, you will need a dedicated charger. These can be hooked up to a computer's usb port.

As a useful alternative, a usb/ac wall adaptor can also be used instead of the computer's port with the eGo charger plugged into any wall outlet:

A couple of the more easily used juice carrying devices for beginners are the Kanger T3 clearomizers:

or
the Vision Mini Vivi Nova clearomizer tanks:

Nicotine Juice selection is very subjective. Just know that you will never find an e-juice flavor that can duplicate the taste of a cigarette. If you smoked a non-menthol, you can try a tobacco flavor. If a menthol smoker, you can try a menthol flavor. However, most people find after some time vaping that they don't want anything to do with a flavor that reminds them of cigarettes. There is a wide variety of flavors to choose from. From fruits, candy, coffee, adult beverages, etc. I recommend trying a variety, you'll surprise yourself what you'll end up liking most.

In the beginning, sampler packs or small trial sizes are recommended before buying larger bottles of juice that you may not care for. Figure on consuming at least 3-5ml of juice daily. For beginners, 18-24mg of nicotine strength is recommended. Here are two of my favorite vendors to order juice from. They also offer sampler packs:

Organically Flavored E-liquid | Virgin Vapor | Electronic Cigarette Organic e-Liquid | Electronic Cigarettes

Vaperite | Organic and Natural Flavored Electronic Cigarette E Juice

foesho thanks for starting this thread...Im in the same boat too.

Baditude I saw your album you have some tricked out setups. Is there a place on this forum that has pictures on "The anatomy of an ECig" Kind of a visual person. I'd like to see a pics of the different types of tanks - batteries and then perhaps why one is better than the other or perhaps why would one choose one over the other based on vaping habits. Same request goes for all the other things like atomizers, cartomizers, drip tips. 510/808s etc etc

Thanks
