First you need to define "backup". There is a difference between having a second setup, and having a backup.

The second setup is for your convenience, the backup is for if Hell freezes over and nothing seems to work.
IMO if you can't use your backup for a hammer, and still vape it ... it isn't a reliable backup. It needs to be indestructible, but it doesn't have to be the best vape on the planet. It just needs to get you by while you get your regular setups sorted out/replaced.
So your needs are different when looking for a backup, or looking for a second setup.
If you want a second setup ... get what you like.
If you want a backup ... get what you can't brake.
Pretty stringent rules for someone with maybe $80 total invested.

I don't disagree.

Though sometimes our short term budget doesn't coincide with our long term goals until we have that backup that allows us time to save for better gear.

Got any suggestions that fit Op's apparent price range assuming no electrical knowledge with the long term in mind?

Thanks, all, for the advice. I've narrowed down a few choices...will probably just end up with the same combination I have, but I'm eager to see how the Subox holds up for everyone over time because I like the looks of that. And I do like the size of the Joyetech eGo One as another poster suggested, so I'll be checking that out as well. I appreciate the information!

Something like this?

Also 2 more SS and a brass nemmy not shown in the picture. :p
(Yes i love the nemesis so...)

As for TS: Either another copy of what you like atm, or try find another device within your price range. That may or may not be better than your current setup. :)

But if you mean it as a TRUE backup Mech mod is the way i think. Just make sure you know the battery safety. And always check for shorts before you fire the mod, with a multimeter or an ohm meter. Even for prebuilt coils if you're using that. (I've had plenty of shorted kanger coils for example)

IMO, the ideal backup is a mechanical mod of your choice (but not a hybrid), 2 AW IMR batteries & charger, and a box of simple cartomizers. (replace the cartomizers after you learn how to wrap a coil with a RBA)

My first "real" backup was this lil' bugger.

And yes, that's the one that fell out of a duck blind, and spent a week at the bottom of Ogden bay. It still looks and works perfectly.
