Hello,

My dad has been smoking since he was 15. He quit when we were growing up but started again when I was in high school. Last year he had a major heart attack that should have killed him, per the doctors. He was smoking two packs a day, then got down to 4 cigarettes a day after he got better. His doctor, and the rest of his family, want him to quit because we know how bad it is on his (weak) heart. I know that it is something that he has to want to do, but I'd like to help him get there.

I am not a smoker, but I have friends that use ecigs and I think they could be a gateway for him. However, I worry that the ecigs they use may not be strong enough at first for my dad to feel like he's still actually smoking a cigarette.

I want to purchase them for him and his wife, also a smoker who is going through her own major health problems. What would you recommend? I don't think they'd appreciate anything very technical or that takes a lot of time to learn to use. He's a big menthol fan and I think something menthol-flavored or just regular tobacco would be best.

Please help me help my dad. I appreciate any and all thoughts on this subject.

Thanks,
Autumn

That's so great you're doing this for your father. As many mentioned an eGo style is a great choice. 2.0 cartomizers and a Low Resistance atomizer will give a warmer vaping experience with that kind of PV.

There will be some learning curve, but honestly it's not that bad and very much worth it. After the first month your father should be much more comfortable vaping and possibly even ready for some new vaping gear! If he can I highly suggest he come by to ECF. I want to mention what may seem intimidating reading about online here, is MUCH easier when the equipment is actually in your hands.

Since he's cut down smoking 18mg strength liquid may be a good choice. I strongly recommend trying small samples 3ml, 6ml bottles of a couple different nicotine strengths and various flavors to see what he will like. 18mg may be too strong, or too weak he won't know until he tries.

Best of luck with your dad!

The KGO would be perfect but also may be too big for him. I would use a good EGO. Be sure the battery is at least a 3.7v, the higher the better.

As far as nicotine levels in juice, I would actually talk him into doing a step method. Although the other chemicals in analogs (ciggs) are terrible, the nicotine is just as bad for a person's heart. Start off with a nice 24 mg and then step down. Get him into doing this step method until he is down to 0 nicotine but can still enjoy the flavor and feel of smoking without the garbage that can hurt his health. A good idea is to use a juice that is 85/15 for a good vape and plenty of vapor/"smoke".

I also would recommend the cartomizers and not use the kits anomizer with carts as the carts do have a major tendency to leak or condesate getting juice into the mouth. A Boge LR is really good. However, with some juices, the LR actually produces way too strong of a flavor and throat hit so a good idea is to get regular 2.0 Boge cartomizers.

Being a man and a heavy smoker myself, I can attest this is the way to go. I have smoked since the age of 12, a heavy smoker since the age of 19.

The only problem with the KGO is it is manual and he may not like that. It is not difficult to learn to use so hopefully he will like it.

I just got converted from regular cigarettes to e-cigarettes and I am one of those people that thought I would never quit smoking and didn't even want to quit, so if it works for me then I have hope that it can work for a lot of smokers. I had not had success with anything else and was totally shocked at how much my e-cig reduces my cravings and how much it feels like smoking (almost better in some ways). What worked for me was the E-Lites "G9 Series" which I bought as a kit from e-lites.org . What I like about it and why I would recommend it for other smokers is that it looks, feels and tastes as close to a cigarette as possible (IMO), it is extremely simple and easy to use, and it has great battery life. After people have been vaping for a long time many seem to want to switch to something fancier or more customizable and they don't care whether it looks like a cigarette or is the shape/size of one, but when someone is first trying a possible switch from smoking to using an e-cig I think it's very helpful to have something that resembles a cigarette and simple to use. It also helps trick the brain and help with the mental addiction to have something that seems like a cigarette. E-Lites come in regular or menthol.

One thing that I've personally found helps many people with the switchover to vaping is introducing them to some form of relatively easy to use tank system. I tried to switch back in October of last year, along with 4 friends, but by mid-november, we were all smoking as many analogs as we had been previously. I purchased a basic DCT Tank the end of January, and was blown away by how much easier it was to just fill it and be able to just pick up my ego and vape away, instead of having to worry about dripping, or the carto burning, etc. Got a couple more tanks and gave them to my friends as gifts, and 4 out of the 5 of us have been 99% smoke free for the past month, since.

I think the suggestion of a kGo, or even the smaller eGo is an excellent one for your dad. That's what I would've gotten mine, had he lived long enough.

They're large enough, but not too big, and simple but perform well and won't cost either of you an arm and a leg.
You're wise not to insist on having him go through the newbie initiation rites of getting an analog look-alike and constantly rotating and charging batteries all day as their capacity continues to dwindle.

He'll catch on to a manual button in no time flat. He can't be dumb enough not to, since he has a pretty smart daughter.

Pick up a variety of flavors. This will be the hardest part, to find something he likes in the right strength that he can comfortably step down from.

Good on you for doing this and good luck to all of you.

I have to politely disagree with sailorman. I think that most people would prefer/benefit from having an analog (regular cigarette) lookalike when first switching from cigarettes, as opposed to something that looks nothing like a cigarette and functions nothing like a cigarette, that you don't hold like a cigarette and that is complicated to use and has an overwhelming number of options. Especially if it is being bought for them as a gift without it being their idea.

Smoking addiction is not just a nicotine addiction, people are mentally addicted to the act of smoking and to the cigarette itself. I think it was a huge help that my first e-cig looked and felt like a cigarette, that I don't need to hold down a button to operate it, I just suck on it like I would a cigarette and that it is extremely easy to use.

I don't have any issue with battery life, I find a battery charge lasts about 24 hours (and I'm vaping pretty much all the time). If you get a kit with 2 batteries and you charge at least one of them while you sleep there is pretty much no chance you will get stuck without a charged battery (with this model). Of course not all e-cigs have this good of battery life but it is untrue that analog lookalikes can't have good battery life. The other thing that I think is really valuable is that the one I have - E-Lites - is super simple; it just has 2 pieces and all you have to do is screw them together. When it runs out of liquid (which is not very often) you just swap the mouthpiece for a new pre-filled cartridge.

I think that sometimes long-time vapers tend to forget what it was like trying an e-cig for the first and that just because they prefer a certain type now does not mean that that type would be a good idea to give to a current smoker. They can always buy themselves a different type once they get the hang of vaping and no longer mind the idea of using something that isn't at all like a cigarette. Making it as easy as possible to switch and removing any possible barriers to their mind adjusting to using an e-cig is really important IMO.

Never charge batteries while you sleep.

I would recommend a KGO with LR 1.7 cartos like the Resurrectors from Crystal Clear Vaping, though other vendors sell them using different names.

For e-liquid I would go with an assortment of strengths: 18mg - 24mg - 36mg. You can't be sure what strength will suit him best.

Right here you go but I would also suggest making the resurrectors stainless steel, getting a dual coil tank, and a carto puncher. Less refilling and fiddling.
