I recently purchased a vaporizer to help wean me off of nicotine in an attempt to quit my pack-a-day habit. There is only one problem. My e-cig is unbearably harsh for the first 20+ drags then becomes quite enjoyable if I am willing to tough it out. I notice when it does become enjoyable I can feel heat coming from the coil on my fingers if that helps. I am aware that i need to let a new wick sit for at least five minutes before vaping and i usually take several unpowered drags to help get the juice flowing. I've listed what I am using below as I'm sure it will help diagnose the issue. Thanks in advance.

eGo c-twist battery
kangertech evod (supposedly pyrex with two windows if that helps narrow down the model)
1.8 ohm coil unit
aer natural red 18mg (started on this)
taste e-liquid 12 mg (moved to this hoping the milder flavor and lower nicotine might aid the issue, it didn't)

I usually run between 3.4 and 3.8

Thanks, again

Did you try putting a couple of drops of e-juice straight into the atomizer first?
Does this happen every time you use it from cold or every time you refill or...?
Did you try changing the atomizer? It might be a bad atty problem.
Did you/do you clean the whole tank setup with anything else than warm water?

I once drooled into my tip and got a burnt taste the next vape. Cleaning the atty and installing a new one meanwhile fixed the problem.

Could also be the juice itself...

Yes, Atty = Atomizer = coil/wick unit assembly. Cleaning that part is not really necessary unless you switch flavors often. 2 drops of juice in the open top end helps when installing a new one, but giving it time to absorb the liquid and taking "primer" puffs should be enough. Having issues every time it's cold is very unusual... I'm tempted to point out your e-juice as being the culprit, but I could be wrong. High VG content could also cause this type of problem.

When I brought this problem to the shop owners the only idea they had is that I was "getting used to" the pg and he said the pg content was high in my taste e-liquid. he said the pg produced the throat hit but I am a pack a day smoker so i'm not sure if that would be an issue for me. My gut tells me it is some sort of wicking issue and I need to get the proper ratio to achieve the right viscosity. I have read other threads similar to my issue and the general consensus was to shoot for a 50/50 mix.

I've no clue. I was going to suggest a lower resistance coil but saw you were already using the 1.8 Ohm, which usually works quite well on this setup. A possible solution might be to take double draws. That is, take a very short puff and blow it off. Then draw on it in your normal manner.

Off topic, but if the vendor's label does not specify nicotine content and percentages of base mixture, I'm spending my money somewhere else. Money is not so plentiful as to spend 5 to 10 dollars on a 10 mil bottle with a good chance that I won't like it well enough to finish it. I happen to use 70% pg. If you don't know what you're vaping, how the heck are you going to find out what your preference is?

Make sure you shake your 12 mg juice before putting it in. All the nicotine tends to reside in the bottom of the bottle and when you use the dropper you're grabbing from that. IMO that harsh hits you're taking is sort of a nic overload. Shake your bottle before using or maybe consider dropping to 6 mg or mixing 0 mg with 12 mg to get desired result. Hope this works out! Keep vaping!

I vape 70% pg and, as an ex PAD smoker, I find that most of the harshness is coming from high nicotine concentrations rather than the PG alone. PG is more liquid than VG, so a high concentration of PG should wick easily.

If they can't provide ratio numbers, then something weird is going on. I'd try to find another shop and see if their liquids feel better.

What exactly do you mean by harsh? is it sort of a spicy tingly feeling in your mouth./throat? Or is it more like its just too thick of vapor and you can't inhale it?
Like the others have said, nicotine% and PG/VG ratio are important. I like higher VG, it seems a little smoother on my throat. Higher than 60%PG gives a harsh hit to me and this sounds like what you describe. Nicotine gives more of a spicy taste in your mouth IMO, but you said lowering the nicotine didn't help so I'm assuming thats not the issue.
Also, you didn't mention exactly how long you've been vaping. If only a week or two you may just need to get used to it. the vapor is a different feeling than smoke.
Hope this helps.
