Hi all,

My local shop only has the new Atlantis .3 ohm BVC coils in stock and out of desperation I'm trying to figure out if I can safely and effectively run those coils on my Atlantis v2 on a VaporShark dna 40. The coil itself says 70-80 watts recommended however when I checked my DNA40 on steam engine it says it can run ohms as low as .13?

I've tried reading countless articles on ohm's laws, etc and all I've manager to figure out is how to calculate watts from resistance and volts! And I don't even know why I need to know that!

Please help.

You can use it but you may not get as full bodied a vape out of it. I have found that the sweet spot for the .3 in the Atlantis 2 is about 60 watts but it will still fire at 40 and give a good puff.

I just tested it at 40 on my sigelei and it is giving me 3.5 volts at that wattage. A very cool vape but still a good sized cloud. I like my vape a bit warmer than I am getting at 40 watts but I would have no problem vaping it at this wattage all day.

I would say it would be good to grab the 1.0 coils when they are available for you but you can get away with the .3 for the time being.

I found this info in a review.

The temperature protection setting is accessed from the “locked” position by holding down the wattage up/down buttons. The default temperature setting of the DNA 40 is 450F, but you are able to set the temperature protection from 200-600F using the wattage up/down buttons once you enter that menu option.

The possible error messages that can appear on the display screen for the DNA 40 chip are as follows:

  • – Check atomizer
  • – Shorted
  • – Weak battery
  • – Temperature protected (means the coil has reached the max temperature protected setting during a single puff)

It also said it should read automatically what coil type and the display will be different for nickel coils. If it is showing temp on the screen with the tank on it isnt reading it right.

Yeah, I ended up buying a .5 ohm coil today and tried it on the DNA 40 and it did not attempt to monitor the temp anymore. Then when I switched back to the .3 ohm non-nickel coil I started getting the temp protected massage again. Maybe it has to do with the lower resistance on the coil.

Glad to hear you at least got it working. I wonder why it struggles to read the .3 correctly. Let me know if you figure it out, I hate an unsolved mystery.

Thank you for your help, I think I may have found the problem. Surprisingly the vapor shark DNA 40 does not come with a user manual despite how technical it is to use. So I browsed online and found a user manual from EVOLV for the DNA 40 chip which helped shed some light.

When you switch tanks on the DNA40 it prompts you by asking if it's a new tank you're using. You have to click up for "yes" and down for "no". For some reason when I switch tanks I do not get prompted if it's a new tank and it continues on the same settings as the last tank. In my case I had on a nickel coil on my Kanger Subtank with temp protection on and then switched to the non nickel Atlantis tank without letting the DNA 40 know it's a new tank so it kept trying to sense the coil temp.

I'm going to email vaporshark about this to see if they have an explanation on how to manually let the mod know that a new tank is being used.

Have you tried the .5 followed by the .3 so that it thinks it's the same tank? Or does it automatically assume the .3 is nickel when you throw it on?

Also what do you think of the temp control with the subtank? Is it any different than variable wattage from what you can tell? I have shinyitus but am trying to convince myself I don't need temp control until the price drops.

I haven't tried the .5 followed by the .3 but I will tonight. So far I've only tried going from the nickel coils on my Kanger to the .3 coils on my Atlantis. And then today from the .3 to the .5 both on the Atlantis.

Honestly I'm still not sure if the temp protection is a must-have feature for me. The temp protection feature in my opinion has two main uses; to achieve a specific vape temp, or to prevent dry/burnt hits. If either of those features are useful to you then I say it's definitely worth it. If you're just trying to prevent dry/burnt hits then you can achieve that by just making sure your wick isn't dry. But if you want to always vape at a specific temperature then the TP is useful since you can't really achieve that without some sort of a sensor. Ultimately for me it's just another way of adjusting my mod (temp vs watts vs volts) that I still have no clue about!

Just wanted to leave an update:

While using my vaporshark today I got the dreaded screen glitch which tells me that the model I have is an early production model. From what I've read these early models had issues with temp protection and other reliability issues so I'm calling VS tomorrow to have it replaced. Just wanted to post this on case someone who is thinking of getting the DNA40 read this. I believe the late models have had this issue fixed with an update on the EVOLV chip.
