I probably need to thin the cotton out in the channels.

Sheesh, this is exhausting :p

Frustration is part of the learning process. Especially when you have opted for more than you were ready for. Right. Less cotton in the channels.

Well, I'm not sure how one just knows what he/she is "ready for" until they try it. I'm willing to learn and play by trial and error, and will do so without coming here for help, if that's more preferred. I don't mind frustration - Lord knows I'm used to learning the hard way - but I do mind jabs from someone who doesn't know me.

Not meant as a jab-- hard to tell on-line what kind of person I am talking to. sorry.

I appreciate the apology. I started vaping to quit smoking (typical). It's become a hobby for me because my "real life" is Mama and full-time caregiver to my husband, a 100% disabled Veteran/retired Marine. I need something of my own, something - the ONLY thing - that I do JUST for me. That's the kind of person I am. And, that sounds altogether quite pitiful, actually ;)

Look what I found when I took the wicking out this morning. GROSS!!! Cleaned it all out well, dry burned, wicked it again (I DID IT ON MY OWN! WOOT), put it back together, and .... HEAVEN!

Megan, sounds like you might have your cotton wicked too far down the liquid channels; you shouldn't be getting any dry hits on this atty. If you're using cotton, try and poke just the very end of the strand into the channel before screwing the bell on top. Try wetting the cotton with some liquid and use a pin, it will sculpt easier.

I have been running the same cotton in mine for about 10 days now, no dry hits, no flooding, using max VG liquid.

My understanding is the Orchid can wick quickly. Now I don't have this particular atty, but I'm thinking:

1. Your cotton may be too thick passing through the coil. With cotton you want to feel just a slight resistance

2. I believe the wicks should just touch the tops of those juice channels and no longer.

I do think there was too much cotton in there the first two times. This third time I used less and although I was afraid it wouldn't be enough, it's much better. Let's hope I remember that the next time I rewick!

Megan, the PG / VG ratios of the liquid you are using will be deterministic on how well your wicks will perform.

If you have too much cotton in the liquid channels and your juice is too thick, then you will encounter dry hits. This sounds like the problem you were encountering. Is the new juice higher in concentration of PG? This will cause it to have a lower viscosity and therefore wick better in denser cotton.

The orchid (fasttech clone) is my adv and have had some trouble with wicking. I use 50/50 juice and deep lung hits at 25 watts though. I've messed with the tails a lot and it's been hit and miss until my last 2 most recent wickings. 1 on a 0.5 ohm dual build as well! I found that it wasn't just the tails, but I actually needed more wick on the deck/tighter in the coil, with just the tiniest sliver going down the channels. I use rayon btw which definitely works better for me.

The wick hasn't been juiced and manipulated here but make sure there is a bit of a thick tuft of wick sitting on the deck above the juice channels.
