I'm over 40. I grew up in Austin, Texas, and my parents were hippies. I heard a lot of classic rock, folk, blues, Motown, and jazz as a child. I rebelled as a teenager by listening to punk, metal, rap, new wave, anything they wouldn't like. I mellowed out a long time ago, and pretty much like it all, but if it's going to be country, it needs to be really old like Bob Wills, Hank Williams, or Woody Gu
thrie(who had the best guitar sticker ever). I worked on 6th street in Austin for a few years, and got pretty tired of rockabilly after having liked it at first. Remember when swing dancing was popular? All the 'headz' I have known in my life have gotten me burnt out on Bob Marley, but I do appreciate authentic ska, dub, and even reggae as long as I haven't heard it a million times already. In all the bars and restaurants I have worked for, half the employees were in a band or DJs, a quarter were in 'the theater', and the rest were a mixed bag including myself. At the same time, I have been turned on to so much music that I never would have looked for on my own. In the past decade I've been hanging out with too many DJs, thus my current musical influences are close to one track. Did I mention I am a video game junky?
Let's not live in the past, what's on my phone's memory card right now... 13 & God, Amon Tobin, Birdy Nam Nam, Bonobo, Burial, Busdriver, Clouddead, Clubroot, Fog, Flying Lotus, Freestyle Fellowship, Gaslamp Killer, Hudson Mohawke, Moresounds, Mount Kimbie, Onra, Peanut Butter Wolf, Samiyam, Shigeto, Subtle, The Bug, The Thulsa Doom, Themselves, Why?
Some of you will recognize one or two of these names. If you know them all, you might be a DJ.
I wouldn't subject you nice folks to those electronic/hip-hop bands, but here are two of my favorites that play traditional instruments, from right here in Austin! I'm not sure how to describe them, but it's all instrumental. They broke up and formed a new band, but back in '08 Facebook wasn't the only game in town. I know it's on myspace, but the link still works. LOL, myspace
The Thulsa Doom
Before that, some of them were in...
The Alpha Rhythm
And like the name implies, it is relaxing.
There ya go. That's what I like. Hope somebody else likes it.
