Welcome to ECF, great place to start for advice.
Ecigs
can save you money if you
buy one kit, stick with it and
buy or make your own liquid for it and don't use it up really fast. But until you find what works for you, expect to spend a little. It's worth it in the long run, anyone here would tell you that. Best bet is to research and ask questions about the best options for you with whatever kit you end up with.
It kinda depends on you and how much you're willing to spend on the actual ecig. For the affordable and good starting ecigs, here you go...
The most reccommended models would be the riva and ego:
Riva Electronic Cigarette - Starter Kits - Riva 510
Ego Electronic Cigarette - Starter Kits - Joye eGo
(Click the discount code banner on the top of the libertyflights site for 20% off)
They're reccommended because they work, the batteries last a decent amount of time and you have a lot of options for connected items to them (atomiser, cartomiser, clearomiser etc). The only difference between the ego and riva is the riva is regulated at 3.7volts and the ego is a little lower at 3.4v or so I think apart from aesthetics. The heat difference from 3.7v to 3.4v isn't really noticeable so I think it's down to aesthetics and price really.
If you want one that looks like a cigarette, many would reccommend halo or the volt or bloog.
Volt:

Halo:
G6 Basic Starter Kit - G6 E-Cig
Bloog:

Every one that looks like a cig and is roughly cig size, expect 2 hours or less out of one battery and less performance and compatability options as compared to larger models such as the ego or riva. The volt, bloog and halo, I'm led to believe are essentialy the same thing, so it's down to price/aesthetics if you choose one like these.
Ok, aside from the whole kits, you have options.
You can use an
atomiser which will likely last the longest but is slightly less portable than other options.
You have
cartomisers which tend to hold more liquid but not last as long (they are considered disposable).
Clearomisers are similar to cartomisers but you can see the liquid inside but they aren't the easiest thing to get working.
You also have
tanks which are like an atomiser and a cartomiser combined; a cartidge full of liquid that feeds into the atomiser unit (they are a little fiddly to get working but if you do they're easy to use and very portable, but you will get flavour loss using these). All tank kits are marked as T;
EgoT or
510T for example.
The Ego and Riva are both
510 threaded meaning if you buy them you can use any atomiser/cartomiser/tank setup you want with them as long as they're 510 types.
The volt/bloog/halo are all
KR808D-1 units. You can use any KR808D-1 threaded device with them that isn't marked as (LR) or low resistance (which will run hotter but will drain the battery faster).
So, choose a kit and consider what you might like in terms of what heats your
eliquid (nicotine solution). Then choose your eliquid. As a general rule, the higher the nicotine content is in milligrams (mg) the stronger it will be on your throat. Typically used is 18mg to 24mg as your first level of nicotine in your liquids.
You have usually two options with your liquids after that; they can be
pg or
vg based:
As a general rule, pg is harder on your throat and more drying but is more flavourful and produces less vapour than vg.
Vg is softer on your throat, less drying but will have less flavour and will produce more vapour than pg.
For this reason the majority prefer a mix of pg and vg to get the benefit of both.
If I can direct you to the suppliers list here:
Forum Suppliers you can shop from any of these vendors and can trust them not to rip you off. Here is also an FAQ that could help answer any other questions you might have:

Please be aware that the units I reccommended to you are by far not the only options available to you, they're simply the most suggested and popular as starting ecigs. I hope you find the right ecig and liquid for you. Good luck out there!
