Just my 2 cents on the fuse. You don't *need* it, the spring does serve the same safety function, however, the fuse (I use a shortstop) after being tripped, will, within a minute, reset itself, and so is reusable over and over. The spring has to be replaced if it sags.

But I wouldn't ever use my woody without a fuse or shortstop because the springs aren't as easy to replace than in a Reo Grand. Although the OP wasn't talking about a woodvil, we all know at some point he will be! So I say, slap on a fuse, pay your taxes and go to church on Sundays, folks!
