Hi all,

As strange as it may seem, the real new user is my wife who's a workaholic and have no time to post and read this forum regularly, so I've registered in order to inform myself about vaping and try to give her some answers.

She's trying to make the swap from cigarettes to e-cigarettes as we speak. I've just offered her a smok R80 TC starter kit and she's finding the transition a little hard.

What is the best sub-forum category where I can post some questions about the feelings she's having? Like chest pain for instance?

Thank you all and best regards,
Alex

Welcome Alex @naavt

I'm not sure I would have managed to start with a TC 80w kit, as I struggled with basic e-cigs at less than 10w. However, a good mod is an essential part of vaping (for reliability and battery life) so if it doesn't work out, you could put a nice gentle tank on that mod and "walk before running" with something non-TC and non-Subohm. Not everybody can inhale vapor at high power for some time while they get used to it.
I suspect this might be related to the comment about chest pain. Nobody should be suffering from that, so I wish her luck.

What sort of power? What strength of Nicotine? What PG/VG ration in the e-liquid?

She used to smoke JPS slim cigarettes and I've told that on the vapor shop where I bough the e-liquid and nicotine ampoules for her. They thought that half an ampoule mixed in the e-liquid bottle would suffice but she complained about throat soreness so we decided to mix just 1/3 of a nicotine ampoule on a new bottle.

I'm always certain that the module is set about 45 to 50 watts and she's using a 0.25 ohm coil (the spare coil the kit had since we blew the fitted one trying to put the thing to work on the first day - newbies!).

I don't know the PG/VG ratio since i'm all new to this and I'm just starting to learn about it, but I will reply as soon as I arrive home and see what's in the bottle.

Gosh... 45- 50 watts.

Yup, I'd have been calling for ambulance support.

It sounds as if you have been supplied with separate nicotine 'shots' from the shop. This is something we are expecting to happen often now in the EU.
If the nicotine is 18mg (it won't be over 20mg) than you need 1/3 diluted with 2/3 flavor liquid to make 6mg.

Just to give you an idea, naavt, I've been vaping for years, and never vape higher than 14 watts, using coils at 1.5 to 1.8 ohms.

This is more typically where people have begun with their vaping experience. Some move on to "sub-ohming" (below 1.0 ohm) at higher wattage, usually with a "direct to lung" inhaling technique and some don't. The way I vape (lower wattage, higher resistance coil) is usually called "mouth to lung" vaping, and is most like the mechanics of smoking.

You can read more info about these two different styles here and here, among other places. We have every type of vaper here, so can answer most any question!

I'd suggest starting with a beginner set-up, though. I think the Ego Aio is well-thought of as good starter device that's simple and works well without having to have a PhD in vapology. :)

You also pointed out a key aspect of all this: seems to me that e-smokers have to accomplish some kind of PhD in electronics and chemistry to make it all work

It has become horribly complicated. A few people luck out and start with something that works for them. The rest don't, and either decide vaping isn't for them because they don't understand all the options, or happen upon a good resource (like the ECF:)) and get the advice and mentoring they need to make a go of things.

You don't need a new mod (the battery part). Just because the Smok R80 can put out 80w doesn't mean you (or your wife) have to use them. It can also tootle along at 8 - 12 watts with a higher resistance coil, with the advantage that a charge will last a lot longer.

It sounds like she might need a new tank. The Nautilus, Nautilus Mini and Triton Mini are all lower-powered options that might suit her. They use the same coils. Perhaps you could get packs of different resistance coils (say 1.2 ohms, 1.6 and 1.8) and she could try them out to see what works best for her. She'll probably want to increase the nicotine again if she goes for a higher resistance, but that should be fine because she'll go through juice a lot slower than she is now.

Good luck to you both. I hope you find what you need at the shop, and whether or not you do always feel free to ask more questions. Learning is the key to success.

Well, a few hours on the forum gave me some valuable informations about the subject. I thank you all your comments.

Came from the shop right now and followed Tazzle's suggestion on acquiring the Ego Aio. What I've found most fascinating about it is its "automation" (if I can call it that way). The guys at the shop told me that the module automatically recognises the coil resistance and acts accordingly, bypassing the need to fiddle wattage amounts manually, so that's a major plus for a beginner, or so I think.

It comes with two 0.6 ohm coils but I've decided to buy a 1.5 one.

Replying to djsvapour about PG/VG ratio on the initial e-liquid I bought my wife, they told me 60% PG. I've now changed things and bought her a Vapy Complex Edition Summer Sensation with 75% VG and 25 PG.

Hoping to make things easier for her and motivate her to make the change and quit traditional cigarettes.

The AIO is a good device @naavt
You can never have too many. (I have 6 in a box to give to people who want to try vaping).
75% VG is a gentle mix.
If you like the AIO with the 0.6ohm coil, you could buy a few packets of coils from China (in advance) for something in the region of 5 euros for a 5-pack.

The explanation about how it works is not really correct. It's not that clever...

I love it though. :)

My wife just tried the AIO yesterday and she told me that the differences are huge. A much more relaxed experience. She no longer has the feeling she had with the Smok, with the smoke hitting her lungs directly (we've installed the 1.5 ohm coil).

She also told me that comparing the two vaping machines, the Smok gave her a strange kind of arrhythmia feeling after vaping, which does not happen with the AIO.

All in all, a good purchase since she can now make her path to the Smok vaper when/if she feels more confident to do it.

@torborx: It had a momentum a couple years back, with a fast grow that was unfortunately severed by government taxes on vaping products.

As a result, many vaping stores closed doors and even in the capital, Lisbon, you can only find about 3 or 4. I've searched the web for a store when I decided to offer my wife a vaping machine, just to find out that many announced on the web are now closed, and that some of the remaining do not offer a good service, trusting costumers feedback that is.

Inhaling from a cigarette and inhaling from a vaporizer are really two different things. I hacked some at first and that was in the 9-10 watt area, too.

Many like the full throat feeling like a cigarette, but somehow, I just got into the routine of holding it in my mouth (2 seconds) and then exhaling through my nose. The nicotine does get into the pores of the mouth, especially the gums, and the little vape molecules catch on the hairs in my nose, too. I get the taste and then the smell.

I have tried lung-hitting, but it has become so routine and my lungs still are not used to it. I don't even exhale out of my mouth.

All-in-all, for vaping, there are different styles of how to take a vape. Obviously, the way I do it does not make big clouds, but I don't vape for clouds. I just want to get my nic fill with an enjoyable flavor/smell.

Anyway, definitely less of a throat/lung irritant.

Good luck!

Good news. The original kit you bought will not be wasted though, as you can use the Smok mod with any tank & coil combination you like.

Welcome and glad you joined.
Glad to hear you have started to straighten things out. Hang in there, you will start to find your way and personal settings that she may like.

I'm glad I've found this community. In a few hours I could find so much useful information and sort things for my wife to a better outcome. Thank you all for your tips. I'll be reading the forum and those suggested guides. I'm not a vaper/smoker, but I'm a curious person and somehow this electronic/liquid combination fascinates me in some way :)
