I just started vaping recently. We were having a discussion about it on another forum lately so I decided to order some starter things to try it out. I have friends in my area that vape so I was already intrigued by the idea. While I am not a smoker (yes, I am getting singed by the flames already from what I have seen on other forums) I was intrigued by something that interacts with a biological system but can be hardware hacked. Put it this way, if getting chips installed to run things was a common operation I would be among the first in line so I could play with robotic interfaces.

Anyway, I went to a vape shop the other day since I was not getting any flavor. First they corrected my technique (holding it wrong and got the impression I was supposed to constantly twist it). Next they replaced the atomizer on my ego. Finally they just concluded the flavor I had in it was just too faint. Unfortunately they only had PG in stock at the time and I can only vape VG (I am a vegan).

How long does seeping usually take? I have had the liquids for 2 weeks now and I thought that was how much time it needed. Or should I just go for more flavor?

PG is not an animal product and would not interfere with your vegan lifestyle, but plenty of vapers do choose to stick to 100% vg regardless. It's a naturally derived product that is used in eliquid to produce more and thicker vapor. Vapor is good. There are some drawbacks tho.

You will limit your choices as far as vendors, and since pg is better at carrying flavor it can seem muted and/or require a lot of steep time. Some vendors use an alcohol to suspend the flavoring in the vg in the absence of pg, if you have any issues with alcohol I would check thoroughly into the vendor's practice prior to ordering. Just something to be aware of.

I vape juices in a range from 65/35 pg to vg down through the reverse, and what needs to steep or for how long really depends on subjective taste. Always try it right away. If it's not quite right or strong enough, steep it (there are tons of threads on different methods) and resample every few days to a week. It may not need to steep at all, it may take a couple of days, it may take a couple of weeks...it's ready whenever it tastes "right" to you and totally subjective. Personally tho, if a month doesn't make it work for me I write it off.

Welcome to the world of vaping!

Actually, there are two types of PG. While most of it is synthetic there are also types that are not (specifically, they use animal-derived glycerin). Being a vegan means paying attention to stuff like that. You get 99.99% with the biggies: no meat, no dairy, no eggs. It is the 0.01% that is annoying.

Hopefully the stuff I bought that arrived 2 weeks ago will get better eventually. If it is still steeping by the weekend though I will just let the bottles I bought sit in the drawer longer and see if I can rescue any of the stuff in the atomizer with a needle bottle. My maple-flavoured bottle seems to be ready and I am looking forward to trying it. If that works I will order a bunch of different maple juices from different places to see which I like best.

Thanks for the welcome!

Also, one thing to remember, unless I'm sorely mistaken, is there is no such thing as 100% vg juice. I think the closest I've ever seen is 98% vg. This is because the nicotine is oftentimes suspended in PG, and regardless of the, all the flavorings contain something other than VG.

{oop noticed the multiquote option after I replied before}

Actually, the place I ordered from, Virgin Vapor, is pointed to by people looking for vegan stuff. Boutique prices from the looks, but it has all the good eco buzzwords on their site. If the only flave from there that works for me is this maple (maple blueberry if I remember right) it will still be worth ordering from them.

I am doing 0% nic. So no PG worries there.

Flavorings in anything are a constant nightmare to vegans, we have to constantly play 'best guess' with them because of US labeling laws. It is perfectly valid to say 'natural and artificial flavorings' in a list of ingredients without going into more detail. With some things you can take a pretty accurate guess (something fruit flavored probably uses plants) but not with everything. This is where word-of-mouth comes into play when people figure out if product X is vegan or not.

Virgin vapor is pretty good. Though not all of them. I don't know that I've tried their maple though.
I know at our shop we have a "green label" brand that we make. All natural flavoring max VG.

I will certainly tell them about the flavoring. Maybe if they add an extra shot or two it would help. The shop confirmed the problem was the flavor was weak so it is not just me.

BTW, does your shop have a site?

Nic is available in 100% VG and although somewhat difficult to find there are flavorings that are PG free. For wicking purposes most VG juices are thinned with distilled water so technically are not 100% but can remain PG free.

Many vendors produce "high VG" which usually translates to a VG base with PG flavorings. Virgin Vapors, Free State Vapors, Tetra Vape, and Open Source Vapor all offer PG free organic juice. There are likely a few others but when I make a vendor purchase (rather than DIY) these are my go to vendors.

Virgin Vapors is a vendor people seem to either love or hate. I tried them early on and they didn't work for me...at all...and with the sheer amount of alcohol they use in their "normal" juices even after 6 weeks the juices I got from them tasted like they were mixed behind a bar. I tossed it all. But there are people who love, love, love them and will vape nothing else. Taste is subjective. *shrug*

My experience is VV takes a month to mature at least. It may turn around for you yet. In the meantime, it doesn't hurt to look around and order from a couple of different vendors.

Since most of your questions have been answered, I'll just say welcome to ECF.... You've found where you need to be. :toast:
Looks like your in good hands! I'll just pop in and say welcome! :toast:

Yes, I probably will restrict myself to VV and the like. In addition to keeping away from something non-vegan my spouse is also vegan and would not be too pleased if I was vaping something that was not vegan (especially if I handed it to her to try as well).

From what I can tell the blueberry maple seems like it is ready to use. If the other flaves are not ready by this weekend I will use a needle bottle to empty an atomizer, clean it a bit, then try the maple.

Even if their only flavor that works for me is the blueberry maple I would be happy and get other flaves from other organic VG places. Originally I was going to get only the maple but decided to get some smaller bottles of other things in the shipment. About a month from them seems like it may be right if it was fresh when sent: it has been 2 weeks since it arrived and the taste has already changed over that time. By changing to the maple (which hopefully is ready) I can let the other stuff seep some more, especially if I order some more things from other places. Worst case I switch to somewhere else and just keep them as backup juices with little flavoring for when I need something.

I did not have the maple with me when I was at the vape shop but their opinion was that it should be ready now because it has a higher sugar content. Which matches the fact that it has a strong smell now.

Of course, I may be biased about the smell. When I was a kid we used to collect and cook maple sap every year so I am still attuned to the scent.

It is often said that VG mutes flavors but I disagree. Because it is so viscous it does however have a longer "steep" time to blend flavors and bring them to maturity.

I've never had issue with the alcohol based flavorings used by VV but left overnight uncapped should evaporate the alcohol.

My hometown is nicknamed "Maple City". Nothing like warm maple syrup fresh from the sugar shack!

And forgive me…I failed to welcome you to the forum. Welcome!

Yes, the alcohol should evaporate easily if you wanted to get rid of it. All of the ones I ordered though were in their non-alcohol line. I love the irony that they call that line Absolute though.

I grew up in NH so tapping trees was par for the course. The last time I asked to be sent some syrup from the area I was sent a 'small' bottle (a quart or so) and it turned out it was from a neighbor who tapped the same trees my family used to use.

.

Too funny! I didn't pick up on that.

That's awesome it came from the very same trees! You're fortunate your "small" bottle was a quart. My request from home netted me a pint. But I'm grateful to have it and dole it out sparingly. The only maple syrup produced where I currently live in NC went out of business last year due to lack of yield related to climate change. :(
