Hi! New member, have some nicotine level questions

Hi all, I have a few questions.

I've been vaping for a few months, and now my wife is interested and wants her own. I bought her the joyetech Ego-C Twist starter pack off MyVaporStore; wonderful store, I can't recommend them enough.

So, she smokes 10-12 cigarettes a day, and has for years. She's tried to quit several times, but that never really works out. I'm looking for a nicotine level to start at that would approximate that level of smoking.

But there's a twist! (There's always a twist.)
First, she had an adverse reaction to my e-juice, we think to the PG content. Her throat got very irritated. I'm only at 6mg/ml, so I doubt it's the nicotine causing it. We're thinking to use 100% VG, but I've read that it doesn't hold the nicotine as well (probably not true, but that's what I've read). I've also read that it doesn't give as good of a throat hit as a PG/VG blend.
Second, from talking to her, taking a lung hit is such an ingrained habit that she doesn't think she'll be able to break it, at least for a long time. I've read that the nicotine vapor does not absorb as well into the lungs as it does into mucous membranes, so lung hitters generally prefer a higher level of nicotine to compensate.

So, taking those thoughts and her daily usage level into account, what nicotine level do you think would be a good place to start?

Thanks for your inputs,
Jeff

Vg will make no difference to the nic but pg does give more of a throat hit yet for me that is negated denoting on what set up your using and the nic level.

I've read nic gets absorbed through the roof of the mouth but not clear on that and if so that covers everyone that inhales the vapor.

For a lung hit it does help to have an atomiser with a good airflow.

24mg / 2.4% of nic is where most people trying to quit start at.

Then some stay or go down on the nic level depending on what suits them or if they change devices.

For someone only smoking a half pk a day, 24mg would have her vomiting in a short time -- probably within an hour. Dunno how she feels about that, but to me it's a fate worse than death.

I'd suggest 6mg -- I smoked a full pk a day but they were ultra-lights, for over 20 yrs, and I had to start at 6mg, because 18mg and 12mg made me nauseous; when I first started, I had to chainvape to avoid cravings. Now I vape about 11mg, but I don't really chainvape, at least not often.

If the 6mg doesn't do it for her, then ease it to 9mg; for a half-pk a day smoker, 12mg would probably induce nausea.

I personally found that a juice with a higher VG rating was more important to me in the sense that it felt a little closer to the feeling of "full lungs" (can't really descibe it any other way haha) that i would get off smoking, and considering she does lung hits, maybe she needs more of the full lung feeling than the throat hit. A big faqctor is the cigarette's she smokes does she prefer lights? or does she prefer a stronger cigarettes? This may help us give you a bit more advice. Aside from that Welcome to ECF!!!!

She lung hits analogs?
I noticed that when some smokers try e-cigs, they will lung inhale and choke, but still do a mouth to lung on analogs. I think they treat the e=cig as a straw. Pointing that out to them will usually be enough for them to start mouth to lung and save their throat.
I lung inhale, but it's only 0.6mg. Recently I ran out of my e-juice on a vacation, and the only thing available was 16mg. Killed my throat literally. I could not take one full puff.
I think that might be the reason your girl has a reaction. Teach her to do a mouth to lung just like a analog. An atty that has a tight draw similar to an analog works better IMHO to start, Hard to get used to doing a mouth to lung on a airry atty
I would recommend 12 or 6 mg. My 0.6mg is way to low to start.

For me lung inhale is more irritating than mouth to lung. It was the same with analogs.

Thanks for the advice, everyone.

She currently inhales mouth->lung, so that is easy enough. She smokes Camel Turkish Silvers, which is a light-ish cigarette, but I can't find any actual numbers on nicotine content. I had been thinking 12-18mg for her, because I'm on 6mg at 2ml/day and it does nothing for me, even though I've never smoked analog cigarettes.

I ordered the starter pack with an Innokin iclear 16D 2.1 ohm atomizer, for those interested. I've got an iclear 30b on mine, so I stuck with what I knew.

to ecf Gramicci101. So glad you are here and it is great that she is wanting to vape with you. I think it is better to start out a bit higher in nic in order to fight the urges and then reduce the nic when she is settled into vaping and loving it. I would go no lower that 12mg nic juice. Plus with a higher nic content it is going to give more of a throat hit that the normal smoker expects. If it is a pg sensitivity, that should be taken care of by vaping vg juices. If it is to think for her atomizer, you can always add a drop of Everclear (PGA Pure Grain Alcohol which would also add a bit of throat hit) or distilled water.

Look forward to reading about her progress. Let us know because this could help others and that is what ecf is all about. Make yourself at home and happy vaping to you both.

Hi, Gramicci101 and welcome to ECF!

Several things can cause throat irritation:

  • Your body getting used to vaping.
Vapor isn't like smoke. It has larger particles than smoke, and it could be your body getting used to the new sensation.

  • Getting dehydrated.
Vaping actually draws water from your body to produce the vapor. It's therefore important to take in plenty of liquids while vaping. Some folks do water, some fruit juices, and some even put just a bit of apple cider vinegar into a glass of water. I do this myself sometimes - sounds yucky, but it actually helps your body to absorb the water, and if you use just a little bit of the vinegar, it's not bad.

  • The flavor of the juice.
Flavors like cinnamon or menthol are natural irritants. That's why they work so well as an over-the-counter congestion relief remedy. Trying a milder flavor might help. (although cinnamon IS really tasty LOL!).

  • The nicotine content of the juice.
Higher nicotine content causes a harsher vape (some call it "throat hit"). Try a couple of different juices with varying nicotine concentrations. It's a balancing act between getting enough nicotine to satisfy your cravings and not getting too much throat irritation.

  • The PG to VG ratio of the juice.
The more PG, the more "throat hit" (and more flavor). The more VG in the mix, the less "throat hit, but less flavor, too. Again, play around with juices of different ratios.

  • Your vaping style.
If you take short, hard draws, one right after the other, this can cause the coil to get quite hot and you'll get a harsher vape because of the heat. Try taking gentler, longer draws and see if that makes a difference.

  • The power setting of your device.
Start with a low power setting, take a draw or two, then step the power up a bit. When you reach the point where the vape is harsh or the flavor starts to go away, back the power down a notch. Each different juice will have its own "sweet spot" regarding power.

  • The heat of the coil.
I know when I first started vaping, I was doing it like smoking. Taking short, quick draws, one right after the other. This gets the coil very hot, cooks the juice and can get quite harsh.

  • Dry hits.
This is when the wicking material can't keep up with how you are vaping. The coil gets dry and you get a nasty burnt taste. Give the wicking a few seconds between draws so that they can keep the coils wet.

Hope this helps and wasn't overwhelming.

Happy Vaping!

Find somewhere that has samples. That way she can try some flavors, pg/vg and nic levels. It could also be the flavor that bothered her. Also if you buy 18mg and it is too strong she can mix it with a 0mg. That's what I did when stepping down my nic level.
For reference, I was a pack a day, full flavor smoker. I started at 24mg after a month or so it was too strong. Went down to 18mg after about 2 weeks that was too much also. I am at 12mg now.
