So I finally got frustrated with replacing my ego pens all the time (the batteries in them were awful) and I just decided to upgrade to a Sigelei 150W box mod, a kanger subtank along with a drip atomizer that I already had from a friend who didn't want it anymore.

Anyway I just finished my first two coils ever and they came out to be about .4 ohm and works great vaping at 50 watt (haven't tried higher yet), let me know what you think for a first build

Seeing how running the legs to that far center post hole is stretching the coil, you may want to consider just slipping the leg into the hole closer to the outer posts. It would probably make your coil bend a lot less, and may provide better results. If nothing else, I would at least give it a shot. If it gets better, leave it with the legs close together. If it makes it worse, put it back to the way it was.

Other than that, it looks pretty good for a first timer. Good job!

Thanks for the pointer and thank you for the compliment, yeah it was a bit tricky to get the coil in there proper and it bend a bit which seems to be causing a hotspot on one of the legs so I doubt this coil is going to last too long so for the next build I'll see about fitting the leads into the closer holes

And another future coil master is born!! Nice work for first coils!

Oh yeah, it's working great now after straightening out the lead and I seem to be chucking some decent sized clouds. As far as the cotton goes, I added a bit more on the side of the closest coil in the picture. I used this video as a guide for how to do the cotton:

EDIT: I've seen that a lot of people seem to prefer torching the wire before working on it, I was wondering how much of a difference does it actually make (I don't have a torch right now to test)

heh, you're following this guy too?

This is not the coil building 101 its cloud chasing 101, means you probably would want to have more coil rounds then just 6. You first coil build seems pretty good, better then mine in fact.

any hoo; Welcome to ecf, I hope you enjoy your stay. If you are using RDAs there is no harm in rounding coils more then 6, like 8-9 should be a good number. Also it wouldnt really hurt making a bed out of the wicks after you thread them through the coils. Good job on none the less.

Torching helps bending the wires and adjust them as per your needs. It's not necessary since just lighting the coil directly from the battery became a common practice.

I agree.. good job. I also agree with what speedy_r6 said.. the smaller the legs, the better. Only things that strike me looking at that picture, is that your screws are almost stripped, and that the cotton could be fluffed out a bit more. But, You should've seen my first build..... horrible.

That looks like a good deck to be doing your first coiling on too.

Well done Dopefish.
What I do is keep the wire going to the positive straight and have the wire to the negative on an angle.
Keep something inside the coil to hold its shape while your adjusting and securing it.

Been ok for me , any hot legs or uneven glowing for me is gone after a strum of the coils.

Good job on your first coil mate!

I use the same building technique as Wolfenstark some good advice there.
IMO mastering wicking is the hardest part of rebuilding. Some people pack the atty with cotton but personally i like to use just enough so the wick is just touching the deck. Also you need it tight enough so it does not collapse inside the coil but not so much that it strangles the coil and can't wick fast enough.

Yeah the screws are in pretty bad shape, this is a used atty that I got from a friend, I'm probably going to hit up the hardware store tomorrow and see if they have any screws for it along with getting a torch and some proper wire tools instead of just using my mini leatherman

I have found the kids like tighter coils, ie. pushing together without cotton and firing them. Also, I found I like more cotton but yours looks great for a newb. If it works then you are a master! My coils would last a month and I made sure they were tight every several cotton switches. Nice job!
What is the different between coil with cotton or not?

Nice setup, and thumbs up for finding RipTrippers, he is an inspiring reviewer which makes super tidy coil setups. Great atty choice for beginners too, your friend knows a thing or two about rebuilding. I only noticed the bad shaped screws only after you pointed it and yes that will be easily fixable. I'm not into cloud chasing or could production ( though I like drippers very much) but for higher powers i.e 50W I would suggest to make thicker coils i.e using 2mm rods and above and have cotton sitting pretty tight inside them to insure you have a good amount of liquid under the coil so you get a nice saturated vape even with a long inhale/drag. Also you don't have to heat the wire to clean it of machine oil, just cut a good amount of it so you'll have for a couple of builds and clean it with water and dish detergent/soap, or isopropyl alcohol and rinse in water again. I choose to dry burn my coils as less as possible until relevant research will prove whether there is or not a reason of concern when doing this.
