I started with a Innoken itaste vv/v3 with a aspire tank on top and got great flavor out of it. the thing was built to last. rolled over it a couple of times with a car and still wouldnt break. after that I went up to the MVP which is has a great battery but was little bulky for me. Since then I have been an active cloud chaser vapin off a Tobh clone rba on a blade mod (which I love cuz when I convince people to switch to vaping I show them how durable my mod is by throwing onto concrete) the thing has lasted me over a year not. the next thing i am probably upgradin to is the hades mod cuz that Tobh clone is killin my 18650's. right now my blade with the tobh on top looks like a miniature german hand grenade. I am vapin at a constant .4 ohms with 26 gauge wire.

I started off vaping on a starter kit from V2 Cigs because in my opinion they're the best e cigs that look like cigarettes. They come in different battery sizes and the bigger ones last longer than the shorter ones. I did that for a few months and then finally realized I didn't want something that looks like a cigarette anymore because they just don't put out good vapor or flavor and got something of better quality. If you really want to get something as close to a cigarette as possible go with V2 Cigs but if you want quality and good vapor production go with an eGo or something like that.

Hi rammstein! :) Love the name btw ;)

All of this must be an overwhelming amount of information for you to soak in... If it were my first time I wouldn't understand a lot of what is in these posts...

Back in 2009 I started off with a cigarette-like device (cigalike), then moved on to another, then another. Let me tell you straight out that you do want one with a button - I know it seems odd and awkward, but the ones with no buttons are like sucking a milkshake through a thin straw, and they can go off just by air blowing on them, which you don't want to happen in your pocket  Also, as others have said, the cigalikes are finicky, they really don't work well. The batteries are too small and last only an hour or two, and I had a lot of issues with leaky cartridges and burnt out coils. I ended up going back to smoking partly due to all these technical difficulties, it is not worth wasting your money!

My recommendations for you:

Liquid - for nic level you want to base that on how much you smoke. If you smoke half a pack a day or less, you should prob start with 12 mg/ml. Between 1/2 pack and 1 pack, go for 18 mg/ml. A pack a day or more, you should prob start with 24 mg/ml. A lot of people will recommend lower nic than I do, but in my experience a slightly higher level will make it easier to quit smoking completely, if that is your goal. You can always cut down the nic later if it's too much. Also, get two different flavors, because you don't know what you're going to end up liking - if you're still unsure of your nic level, you can order them at two different levels and see which one you prefer.

Batteries - since you are first starting out, I would recommend a simple ego or evod battery that does not vary in voltage. The reason I say this is because you're on a steep learning curve already, and I think you should learn how to use the device first before diving into varying voltage and wattage; you can always get one of those later. There are many, many brands that make these batteries, Totally Wicked and Kanger come to mind, but there are a lot more. Make sure you get two batteries - you don't want to not be able to vape at all while your battery is charging! Also make sure you get the charger that is recommended for that battery. It will be USB, so if you want a wall adapter also get one that is recommended for that charger (otherwise you run the risk of overcharging and killing the battery).

Tanks (clearomizers) - You want to start with a simpler tank, and one that fits the ego/evod batteries. Tanks from Innokin (iClear 16 and 16D) and Kanger (protank mini) are good choices for first timers in my opinion. You're going to want to buy extra coils with those, you'll probably have to change them out sooner than you expect (for simplicity's sake, if they offer coils at different resistance levels just get the same as the tank comes with - you can always play with that later).

This is the setup I started with when I went back to vaping in December - 2 plain ego batteries, one charger, 2 Innokin iClear 16's, and 2 different flavors of e-liquid in 24 mg/ml. I quit an 18 year, pack a day habit in one day - and I wasn't even trying! :)

There are a lot of kits available, this makes it much easier for a first-time buyer to get everything you need. Most kits come with one or two batteries, one or two tanks, and a charger. Some will throw in a bottle of liquid for you. Just make sure in the end you have:
2 batteries
1 charger
1 adapter if necessary
1 or 2 tanks (2 is preferred)
A pack of extra coils (they usually come in packs of 5)
2 bottles of liquid in different flavors (and maybe different nic levels)

I hope this wasn't too long winded :) good luck!

I started out with an Innokin iTaste vv 3.0 and a couple of iClear16 Tanks and it worked well for me. Instead of the iTaste vv you may want to get a plain ego twist battery as they are a bit cheaper. The iClear16's are reallsimple to fill and pretty easy to clean if you want to switch flavors. Biggest thing I learned was don't be afraid to ask questions.

The evod kit is a good place to start. I agree with the others that using a cigarette look alike is not going to provide you the kind of experience that is going to keep you on a vaporizer and off tobacco. In the world of personal vaporizers it's extremely rare to find a good set up that is small but works really well. Go with a cheap kit (like the evod) if your not sure your going to like it. If your willing to invest a bit more off the bat then DavidOck pretty much nailed it, spinner or itaste vv, tanks he suggested are also great choices although I'd avoid the T3s and add a vote for Aspire tanks there cheap reliable and you can use more acidic flavors with them plus they kick out a good amount of vapor and flavor for a cheap tank:)

Just to expand a couple of things dragonpuff said.

USB wall-warts are all standard voltage and the chargers only take 420mA. So long as you buy it from a good source, there isn't anything to go wrong with them. Go with anything you buy from a large chain-store or a smart-phone brand. (HTC, Samsung and Apple are rock solid for far more power than you'll ever need.) Chinese unbranded imports are more of a risk, and I've had one of those from an independent cell-phone shop that failed in service and let out the magic smoke.

If you are going with the fixed voltage battery, make sure your tank comes with 2.4 ohm coils. Kanger seems to sell a variety of options and you can easily end up with one 2.4 ohm head and one 1.8 ohm head, or even two 1.8 ohm heads. 1.8 ohm is great at 3.3V, but the fixed batteries at 3.7V are a bit much for it. Those numbers probably change if you are taking about dual coil though.

You will never find a liquid that tastes like a cigarette. You will probably try anyway. If you get frustrated, a vanilla flavour is a good substitute in my experience.

Get backups for everything, if not all at once then within a week or two. No matter what goes wrong, and it will, you do not want your backup to be a cigarette.
