I'm Justine from England. Started vaping about 2 week ago and it's going great. I smoked 20 a day for 28 years. I've stopped a few times before but it's never been this easy. I honestly don't miss cigarettes. The only issue I've had is with the coil. I burnt one out after 1 week. Does anyone know if this is normal? I also couldn't tell it needing replacing until my vape pen stopped working. Has anyone any advice on this?

Welcome to the forum and congrats on quitting stinkies!

Coil life is dependent on many factors, time isn't one of them. How much juice run through, type of juice and what wattage I believe are the primary factors. One thing I know for sure is never wait to refill until the atty is completely empty. Always want juice touching the cotton so it can wick. One dry or even partially dry hit and it's toast.

Very sweet liquids that are also high in VG are known to gunk up coils. Unfortunately, those also happen to be the liquids that newcomers like best because they tend to taste so good.

I don't know what type of device or coils you're using, but some coils can have their useful lives extended with a bath in boiling water. It would help if we knew the brand name and model of the battery device and tank/atomizer you're using.

Some tanks, like the TFV8 series from Smok and those that use the EUC ceramic coils from Vaporesso are known for very long life. You can go through whole bottles of liquid before even thinking about swapping coils with them. The Kanger OCC line of coils is also long-lived, but usually need less power to keep them going through your liquid.

Thanks for the advice. The liquid is 20% VG. I was sold a standard starter kit, basic small vape pen by a company called EV cigs. I think I might have to shop arround. There's not much in the way of regulations of the shops in England and some are better than others. The guy in the shop wasn't very helpful and the pen didn't come with instructions.

Are you sure it's 20% VG and not 20% PG? High VG much more common commercial juices.

Hello Justine and welcome to ecf ! :)
Burning a coil per week seems okay to me but, coil life depends on quite a few factors for example what ratio of pg/vg , if it's a sweeter/darker liquid, what wattage how much you vape on it etcs (there's more of them but i won't list them all here :p). Also i'd highly suggest you shop around see what kind of vape shops you have around since some of them don't really care about you they just want to sell as much as possible (these kinds of shops are all around the world). If your vape pen didn't come with instructions or didn't really help you get started we here at ecf can help you a bit to help you find a setup you might like, but for shops that's for you to find unfortunately since no one has the same opinion on the matter. I for one am more of a sub 0hmer as we use coils which resistance are below 1 0hm (0hms are usually written on the atomiser/coils along with the recommended wattage to use them on). I do not believe in vape pens or ego styles not that they don't work (some here managed to quit on those) but because i don't think they offer enough expandability for when you want to upgrade or move on to something better. I always suggest regulated mods from companies like aspire or smok with a tank of your choice, but that's just me :p.

Hi Justine & Welcome...I looked at EV CIGS and I'm guessing yours has a ce4 Clearomizer for the tank...If it's heavy sweet juice 1 week would about right...Also...Please don't buy Ultra-Cheap Clearomizers...They Leak Horribly & Taste Even Worse...Top quality one's can be had for about $3 each...Mainly "Innokin" or "Kanger"...

Also...Stepping Up to a better "Starter Kit" with a tank that has inexpensive replaceable coils makes a huge difference compared to a ce4 or similar Clearomizer...Several good MFG's/Models around $25+-...Trig :D

Please come back before you do anything rash.

There is now full-on regulation in England, unless you are buying from a dodgy shop.

There are people out there (online more than shops) just ready to rip you off in a heartbeat.

(whoops... gotta go to Morrisons before it shuts...) :sneaky:

Don't rush into anything...Buying another clearo or 2 even at higher B & M Shop price would still keep you going AOK...Any chance you could post a pix of the tank or describe it ? The other thing you need to find out is "WHO" is a reputable On-Line vendor in the UK ?...And there's always Fast-Tech in Hong Kong...Shipping takes a bit but their credentials are substantial...There's a ton of gear out there and throwing mucho $$$ at the wrong gear can make things worse...Trig :D

I think you should look for another starter kit, something reliable and that is branded and easy to use. A pico new user setup springs to mind. You don't have to buy the latest and greatest, but they do make some good starter kits on a reasonable budget. I am partial to the Aspire Zelos as it has great battery life, easy operation, can do temperature control (you probably don't want to worry about that-- yet) and is very light and portable. .Comes with the Nautilus 2 tank which is a MTL tank but does also have a 0.7 coil which can technically be a DL tank, but one of the lighter, less cloud producing ones.

PG/VG ratio does matter, your PG seems high to me, but you can experiment and see what suits you best. I think a better setup and the right ratio of PG/Vg will give you more satisfaction. I vape 15--18 mg nicotine in my MTL tanks, and that does the trick for me. If you're able to wait a bit, you will find cheaper prices online, but I'm not sure exactly of the status of importing gear into England as they have TPD regulations. With that said, that means more vape shops, usually, find one where the staff present know what you are talking about when you spit out those brand names, and can demonstrate various setups.

I am happy to get a week out of a coil unless I run the Nautilus 0.7 coil (which I do like, I set it up with airflow and watts to still be able to MTL but the flavor and coil life are extended). That said, I'm sensitive to PG, and use 100% VG, which is a gunking factor for me. With my factory coils, when they go bad, I soak them in VERY HOT h20 to start, and then let them sit overnight. I rinse and then set outside to dry, I'm usually able to get another 4--5 days out of them, which does reduce my costs, so it's worth it to me. Sweet or dark juices will gunk up my coil even MORE, but I don't worry too much as I'm DIY juice now and I minimize those factors. But, you can find a storebought juice that is clear and vapable. I'm partial to coconut and brandy, if I use storebought juice, and my favorite storebought is coco which I may use on special occasions, but it is a true coil killer, LOL. I purchased a coco flavoring for my DIY and at my next DIY session, I plan to try and make it WITHOUT all the extra sweeteners and see how I do.

Good luck!

Anna

Hi. My tongue kind of felt sore. I took it back to the shop when it stopped working. The guy said it was the coil and sold me a replacement and spares. Up to that point I didn't know I had to replace the coil!! Someone at work told me I should have known as the liquid would taste burnt, but I've probably destroyed my taste buds from years on the cigs.☺
