I don't know the timeline, but I do know the order of the more important advances...
1) The 510 came out and it became a lot easier to get a good hit
2) The KR808D-1 came out and it became a lot easier to use
3) The Ego came out and it became a lot easier to get good battery life

That was when everything came together and successful switching became the norm.
Everything else that has taken place after that is just gravy.
:)

Well... I guess it could have happened that way too...

The Ruyan initial model probably resembled more closely what we use today, outside of the piezo atomizer (which is used in modern humidifiers). Piezo-electric crystals produce a cold vapor, since they are high frequency oscillation devices rather than heating devices.

I suppose that Golden Dragon is getting some royalties from Chinese production of everything that uses their patent. I wonder how that plays into the heating coil design. I haven't seen anything that talks about who holds the patent for that atomization method.

ETA: Hon Lik holds the patent for the heating coil design of the electronic cigarette, although there are separate patents for dual coils held by SmokTech (another Chinese company). Other companies hold patents for various atomizer and cartridge designs.

Yip, I thought the Chinese had it all sewn up. A Very Shrewd Nation indeed.
Well done for providing extra info.:)

A Wise Man once said: Don't let the truth get in the way of a good story. Much better like this:

Vaping "got good" 1 year, 8 months and 3 days ago. It was a cold day in December, the sky was heavy with dark ominous clouds and a bone chilling wind. Suddenly the clouds parted, a beam of sun broke through, a choir sang, angels appeared and it was good.

Well if it's a story you want...
Actually, I invented vaping about 5 years ago in my garage. Whilst wrapping a coil around a cotton wick, I spied a sly looking Chinese man peering through the window. Next thing I knew I had been hit in the head and lay unconscious on the garage floor. When I finally awoke my ecig plans, as well as the coil I was wrapping were all gone! GONE I SAY! Not that it mattered as I was left with amnesia from the head clobbering. This all just came back to me this morning... right around 8:17 or so. Alas! The life I could have led, the parties, beautiful women, all surrounded by thick clouds of my patented vapor. Oh well, I'm off to work on my next invention. It's a phone that's not hard wired! REALLY!!! NO wires...

I think this qualifies as a "missing time experience". Good story, though. I saw some similar stories on UFO Hunters. I'm thinking those weren't Chinese men. They were undoubtedly people from beyond the atmosphere. They probably patented your invention in another solar system far, far, away and brought it back, once perfected and sold it to the Chinese, complete with faked engineering drawings in a strange language. The Chinese subsequently built a huge market in America for an alien product that was really invented here. ;)

It's an ingenious swindle, though. There's no paper trail to follow and the Chinese get to say they invented it.

Man... That makes me Feel Old.

Because I had all of those.

Of course I had a DSE103, RN4081 and a Blu before them. And Many After them also.

I've always read that it was Bill Clinton and Al Gore, who had the time to invent them after they got out of office, and after they invented the computer and the internet...

Seriously though, the Nicotrol inhaler came out in like the late 90's, and maybe that had some influence on e-cigs, but it didnt have a battery or atomizer, just nicotine in a capsule that you inhale.
