I'm tossing around some ideas for the most bare-bones set up I could make to produce vapor. I'm wondering about anyone who has built an atty, I'm thinking a dripper, but want to see anything. I'm not really looking for machined work (but feel free to show it off) as much as anything crude, stripped down, but works. Basically, I'm trying to figure out a home-spun hybrid- making every part but the battery and kanthal. Not sure what luck I'll have...

i tossed around this same idea awhile ago, then realized that it was completely impractical due to the fact that it will cost significantly more than just buying a cheap clone. unless you have a new design concept that cannot be done through modification of a mass produced atty, or you are just doing it for self satisfaction, i would personally recommend against reinventing a $10 wheel. i'm sorry if i come off as discouraging, but there really isn't any practical reason to make an atty from scratch. if you give me a battery, some kanthal, some wire, a knife, and an apple, i could make vapor and vape that apple, but is there a reason to do so? ugh... now i'm having flashbacks of my "water pipe" making days

I hear where you're coming from! I miss the "good old days" when it was worth your while to make a mod out of a battery, heavy-duty switch, hose clamp, and a 510 adapter. Or making a USB passthru with an RCA jack. And I also like to tinker, perhaps more for the tinkering than for the results!

The only difficult part is the connector, though. If you start with some standard base (say from a dripper, or an EVOD base, or something) you might be able to add something very cool on top of it. Machining a 510 or ego connector is just too much of a pain for no gain, though.

LOL, reading this I'm vaping a box with a battery, heavy-duty switch, and a 510 adapter (didn't need a hose clamp...), works very well for less than $10 total cost. For me tinkering is still fun....:toast:

Going to have to give an atty some thought, anything can be MacGuyvered...:2cool:

I actually peeled back the shrink-wrap from the bottom of the battery up about 3/4 inch. Used the hose clamp to bolt the adapter right to the outer metal case of the battery (mechanically and electrically). Soldered the switch directly onto the + terminal, with a wire running from the switch to the adapter center-pin.

It made a very nice bottom-button mod, until my daughter's graduation ceremony, when I started to smell something burning, followed quickly by a rather hot feeling coming from my left thigh! Should have figured out some kind of lock for it......

(BTW - it was just the carto getting very hot.... The battery was fine. In my panic, though, I yanked the wire off.)

Why would people shoot down a topic like this in a forum like this?

Why spend days working on my 3' 1960s West Bend to make a clone I could buy a clone? BECAUSE I CAN!
Same reason I made a plumb bob instead of going to the hardware store. Same reason I made bipod extensions. Same reason I make receivers from blanks.

Plus the way people pay a premium price for reinvented wheels when it comes to ecigs it just might pay off. If I can sell something that cost next to nothing to make with tools I already have for $200 it may not pay for my time but it could pay for more tools or toys.

I'm planning on an RDA first, then I'm going to try to figure out a gennie to fit in a VTR. I have to get around to ordering some stainless for the lathe.

Totally agree and apart from the fact that IMO things you do yourself are better than mass produced things I am going to make a genesis type tank and apart from the connector a bit of wire and a drip tip (usually not included) I think I can make everything else from what is lying around the house. Here a RBA costs £20 roughly and a connector costs £1 so that's a fair saving. RDAs can be gotten cheaper, but then they are even easier to build, but not sure I want to drip as I'm far too lazy for that.

I would so love to have a lathe to tinker around with.

I'd start with making adjustable airflow top caps for all of my genesis atties.

Chamber reducers might be a possibility if not built into the top caps.

Turning metal tanks would be worth while, glass and plastic always break.

Copper positive terminal pins.

The potential for work is just endless.

Very early in my vaping career I pieced together a few tutorials here to create a copper pipe mech mod with an RCA fitting, and created an atomizer from an RCA adapter that would plug into that fitting. The ultimate, no special parts needed(except kanthal), armageddon mod. It's still floating around my house somewhere, and still works.

Love to see pics if it turns up rondasherrill! I was kicking around how to build a simple atty for sampling DIY juice, but ended up modifying an old genesis I had laying around. Screw the naysayers. I'll take 20 hours in the shop over your $10 wheel any day.

Haha at this point there's literally no telling where it's at. I'm sure I will find it at some point. They really aren't hard to make.

1. Build your mod like you normally would, but instead of a 510 female connector, use one of these:

2. Create a small coil with a peice of silica in it(you won't want to be taking this apart all the time to replace cotton) and connect one leg to the center pole, and the other leg to the long part that sticks up in the middle. Then pinch the peice at the top to hold that leg. Screw together and find a drip tip that fits the end the best.

If you are used to the giant 22mm drippers, this is going to be a true test of skill. If you've ever rebuild a standard 510 atomizer though, this will be a breeze.

I am still using the same atomizer I made in this link... http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/modding-forum/214215-i-call-my-mod-warning-graphic-intense.html The brass rods do have a problem with some liquids...but I make my own so it has never been a problem with mine. That could be remedied with another design or material though. This is not something everyone/anyone would want to build...but I like the concept of a simple connection to the atty...atty inside the mod itself with no totem pole sticking up from it. Think IN the box in this case! Another idea I played with but gave up on was a carburetor type atty in this thread... http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/atomizer-mods/74709-finger-atty.html Might give you some ideas to play with.
