has anyone done this? i would like to just be able to replace the coils in my atties because that is all that is wrong with them and there is no sense in buying something when you only need something that is worth a penny to get it working again.

i am looking into rebuildable atties of course, but i don't like how they all use wicks. and it seems like not having a wick would not work because there is a gap between where the coil is supposed to be and the bottom of the drip chamber... and i'm worried if i positioned the coil low in the chamber that it would touch the metal chamber and short, creating more of a headache... the closest i could find to fit my need is this Dream Rebuildable here Phoenix Rebuildable Atomizer - Clone

so i was thinking about maybe modding a cheapo atty, seal off the 510 connector by tapping in a small nail in the hole. wrapping one end of the coil around the nail and fixing the atty tube over the other end of the coil so it contacts the outside of the connector by reassembling the atty without the mesh and white piece. and finally punching an air hole in the atty tube just above the connector.

is this a terrible idea? i have never modded anything but i am planning on making a battery when i have extra money, but building my own atty just seems way difficult. also i will be getting an ohmeter to test the coils before using them on my battery.

poland, and the brassy lands of google
It sounds like you enjoy dripping on a wickless bridgeless atty. With your plan you are removing the ceramic cup, the nickel mesh, and changing the airhole. It sounds like the coil anchoring system would work OK but perhaps fiddly to get 'right' and then the coil is suspended above the pooled liquid without any wick. This part doesn't sound to good and the chance of leaking out the airhole is quite high.

Making a rebuildable is not all that hard, sounds perhaps daunting at first, but quite doable. You want to make it fairly easy to service and made of durable materials. The average atty is meant to be thrown away after some use and is thus made from some pretty cheap stuff. Some better anchoring and some sort of wicking material and you'll be doing much better.

yea, with the cheapo i was thinking about putting a washer under the coil if i can find a good fitting one to keep it. but i figure if i do that i might as well use the dream i linked up in my OP.

no one can tell me if i will short my battery if the coil touches the bottom of a drip tank? it really doesn't seem like it would short because the coil is attached to a post that is coming out of the bottom on the negative, but i'm no electrician and i don't want to short out a battery. perhaps i'll just give it a test go on a modded battery with a normal AA battery i don't need.
