Ugh, I'm so mad at myself right now. Yes I am. As some of you may know if you read my introductory post in the newbie area I was/am a pipe smoker. While I can't claim a great deal of time vaping. I suppose one could call me a newbie still considering that despite my researching this for weeks I only got a real PV (ego style 510 1100mah works really well) yesterday. I gave in today after some 22 hours of not smoking at all.

I suppose that I should consider that a victory, considering I only smoked half a bowl of tobacco instead of my usual half-ounce. However, it does not feel like a victory.

Hopefully the almost painful mouth feel and ashtray taste is a good sign. I certainly hope it is. Ugh that taste is still in my mouth. I'm going to go brush my teeth.

Pffft, I vote victory on this one! After that half a bowl, do you want another one? From the sounds of your post I'm guessing "NO!". In that case, it's definitely a victory.

Congrats on your switch!!!

Want one..not really. The best way I can describe it was withdrawals of some sort. I do know it isn't nicotine withdraws because I've been chain vaping a 24mg most of the night. It has to be one of the other chemicals in the tobacco.

However, yes, less than three grams of tobacco as opposed to 15g in one day is a pretty big step.

And well the ashtray taste...that took three minutes of teeth brushing with a cinnamon and tea tree oil tooth paste to get rid of.

There's no reason to be mad at yourself. It's not like tobacco's easy to kick, and old habits sometimes die really hard, kicking and screaming while they go. Cutting back is a big win.

Yeah well this one is deciding to kick and scream. Hopefully before I smoke an other it will be longer than 24 hours. It was almost painful to smoke that half bowl.

@Steeler Girl

Indeed. That pipe was perhaps the foulest I've had in my life, and I've had some pretty foul pipes before.

ETA: Also I'm already feeling better about this. Thanks guys.

VICTORY! Nope, your tobacco didn't suddenly rot, you just now have some slight taste bud response. :)

I did the gradual phase-over from cigarettes to vaping, so I never had the guilty thing going on. I was allowed to smoke. That also kept the kicking and screaming habit down as the habit knew it was going to be satisfied.

Until the habit didn't want to be satisfied any more because...hey, mint vape! :)

Don't beat yourself up over that little bit, and I'd actually let yourself have it when the craving gets severe. It'll go away, but may take some time. Personally, I see no sense in driving myself crazy, and it worked well in my case.

I still get the occasional urge, but they're weak and short-lived at this point.

I wouldn't have thought I'd have taste bud response already. I never had taste bud response all the times I stopped smoking previously (you know using other methods which obviously failed eventually) after 22 hours of not smoking. Especially not after smoking for 20 years.

Weird.

I noticed the last time I quit before this, that cigarette tasted heavenly when I finally caved after several days.

After a day of vaping, cigarettes didn't taste so great any longer. After two weeks, they tasted the way an ashtray smells, except more concentrated.

It's like our brains learn very fast that there's an alternate method of getting the nicotine that doesn't, y'know, kill us.

Yes the severity of the reaction to the mouth feel and taste was certainly unexpected.

I've tried to quit smoking using the patch, that didn't work at all I smoked while on the patch. The gum was actually nastier than any cigarette I've smoked, and that is with all the mint flavors and citrus and whatever else flavor. So I didn't expect the mouth feel to remind me of the one time I ate a Ghost Pepper on a dare and the taste to be uncleaned public ashtray.

If you aim for perfection you will fail to meet your own expectations. As long as you are making progress you are winning a war against an enemy that had years to fortify it's position in your body and life. Don't stress it just keep fighting the good fight :)

Abe,

You might try some WTA juice. Stands for whole tobacco alkaloid. Aroma ejuice sells it. WTA has a bit more tobacco, juice in it than other ejuices, really helped me out when I needed a bridge between tobacco & vaping.

If regular ejuice is like a light beer, WTA juice is a belt of hard whiskey...

I don't use WTA often now, maybe a few drops mixed in w/other juice at night. But at the beginning it was a godsend, and kept me vaping & off cigarrettes.

Another tool you might use is to vaporize pipe tobacco. There are other forums better suited for vaporizing leafy materials, like ....combustion dot com. I've seen vaporizers that look like pipes for this purpose, not sure where though. Probably at FC.

Confucius say "Look at the tobacco you haven't smoked, rather than the tobacco you have.".

Actually I saw it when I started vaping and delving into this ECF community from someone, but Confucius would've said that if he was still around!

Keep it up man, it's HARD but if you want to stop, you will. That nasty taste you get now from smoking is the thing that actually made me realize I have quit tobacco for good.

Yes I've heard of WTA juices. I think that my break down last night might have been caused by withdrawals from something other than the nicotine. Hopefully this will be a passing problem, but if it continues I'll definitely have a look into WTA. I'm also wondering if a natural extraction of tobacco might help as well. I'm almost positive it has to be some compound in tobacco other than the nicotine as I usually vape between 18mg and 24mg with very few nicotine cravings.

Yesterday I only had one nicotine craving and that was while I was shopping with the ol' lady so I went outside and vaped and that took care of it. And most of the time when I think about it I start to vape and its no problem. Is it safe to assume that the WTA is an unflavored base element in some juices, because if I find that I do need some I'd probably be happier simply adding some drops to a juice that I like than having to find a WTA juice I do like.

Whoever said that was wise.

Well originally I started out with the mental frame work of I'm not "quitting" smoking, I'm "starting" vaping. To me the thing is I really really never have wanted to "quit" on a visceral level before. Sure I wanted to "quit" because I knew I was killing myself, making the house smell like whatever tobacco smoke smells like to non-smokers and etc. But that was an intellectual "want to quit" it wasn't a visceral "I hate this I'm not going to do this anymore."

I think last night what made me more upset is that it made me question if my mental attitude was working or not. I do know that was the first time I packed half a bowl of my usual all day tobacco and absolutely hated it (and myself for smoking it) in a clean pipe.

Abe, you're 90% home. Half a pipe, late at night and you didn't enjoy it... maybe that's 95%.

Is there a pipe tobacco that you really don't like? Maybe you toss the rest of your tobacco but keep that as your crutch. It will taste even worse the next time your cravings get the best of you. Just a thought. Good luck!!!
