I had a stressful night, finally got to sit down and have a puff and I power vaped for about 5 minutes until I just about burnt myself on my battery. I am using an ego with a SR 510 atty, no cone, and the juice didn't taste burnt or anything. It got super hot around the metal band where the button is, to the point where I couldn't even press the button anymore! I know I need to slow it down, but is that normal for a battery to get so hot? Am I wrecking it? I may just have to have 2 PV's on hand for situations like this so I can alternate between puffs, lol.

After letting it cool for a bit I picked it up again and got about 5 puffs off of it before it was too hot to handle. It got progressively warmer after every puff and it takes quite awhile for it to cool down, so if you have wait a good 30 seconds between vapes for it to stay at a decent temperature. I have hit it heavy before and this has never happened, the only difference is that I am using 100% VG, would that matter?

IMHO it is most likely that the metal band is heat sinking the SR atomizer...

If it was the li-Ion batt itself that had got that hot it would likely have vented or worse.

Do not use it anymore. There is no way that the atomizer should be heating up the ring that much, that quick. The atomizer would have to be glowing red to get the area around the button that hot.

Lithium Ion batteries like this can explode in conditions like this. It’s not a suggestion or a recommendation to stop using it, it’s a matter of your safety you must stop using it.

Submerge the battery in a salt water solution for about 2 days, to fully and safely discharge the battery. Remove and make sure it is discarded by quickly pressing the button to see if it lights up. If it does, put it back in the salt water for another few days. This will prevent it from activating to the same condition in the trash.

What Can_supplier said, lelly. Seriously! We want you to be safe.

Is this one of your batts from Happy Vaper? Or is it the one from that forsaken rainbow place??

If it's from Jack, let him know - he will take care of you. No battery (especially a manual) should be unfit to use only a month in. If it's from the other place...cut your losses, do as Can_supplier said, and buy a Mega eGo or two from Jack for future use.

*hugs* Praying for you, hope all will be well!

Lipo batteries can be dangerous, but generally explosions only happen when it is either charged in the wrong mode (say trying to charge as a nmh) or from a dead short. and even a dead short it is more likely to vent. I run lipos in all my rc's and radios, and have been using lithium stuff for many many years. I have puffed up cels but never had a fire or explosion. I have had nmh cels go up in flames...

and when you do the salt water thing, you should pierce the cel with a wooden stake to release.

Lithium Ion isn't much different. the point I was making is people remember fires from these things back when they were first brought into use. Hobby grade chargers sometimes had programming wrong. people used wrong power supplies/sources (like automotive chargers, unregulated power source)... setting a charger on auto detect was another bad idea... a fully charged 2 cel lipo looks like a discharged 3 cel to a charger and then it would try to charge it and put way too much voltage in. so many variables... batteries I understand. we were converting cel phone li ions before the stuff of today was available.

Just to clarify, it was just the metal band that got hot, the rest of the battery was fine. I am not going to dump it just yet. Some juice had leaked between the atty and battery so I cleaned it out and it is on the charger right now. Later I may have to play around with the center contact as per vaporguy's advice as it is not centered anymore. If the problem still occurs, I will find a place to recycle it and pick up a new one from Jack. It is an eGo clone battery from rainbowvapors and their website states a 15 day warranty so I am not sure they will replace it but I will email them about it. Thanks everyone for all the feedback!

When folks dismiss Nucks advice wrt safety, it just gets my polar bear nickers in a twist. By what you have described and Nucks prognosis it does seem you have an intermittent short eg the center post is not aligned. A battery = less then a carton of cigarettes. I just wish folks would not be so stingy when it comes to safety. TOSS IT.

You did the right thing posting about it. You received solid advice. Now do something about it. Jack would replace that battery in a heart beat. just sayin... But Rainbowvapers??? Let it be a lesson learned and please do not become a casualty of frugality.
