Hello, all!

I am getting pretty good at building my own coils now, but I have a question. I typically build them on my ohms reader and thread it with my readyxwick from there, just to find out I have hot legs when I put it on my device. What is your tried and true methods on getting rid of these little suckers? And, please excuse my ignorance, but why are they "bad" to have?

Thank you,
Dani

Dani,

Hot Legs in coils are usually caused by having too much distance between the coils and the posts; The coil legs are too long.

Here is a link to help with some calculations when wrapping coils on Steam Engine.

If you have a picture you could post it could also be helpful to "take a look see", but most of the time when I have seen this occur it has usually been from the legs being too long for the winds of coils vs. gauge of wire, etc.

Also from your post it looks as though you are checking your build with a regular ohm meter, and not a atty ohm meter, threading the wick and then firing it up?

You should always install your coil in your build first, check the resistance of the build with a atomizer ohm meter, then dry fire it to see if you have even heating of the coil from the inside out.

Using porcelain tipped tweezers you can then adjust the coil, reposition it, etc., before installing your wick, this will also help minimize hot spots, cool spots, and hot legs.

Hope this helps?

It does, kind of. I use the steam engine on a regular basis, almost every time to double check myself. How do I get rid of them?

ETA: I don't have any to take a picture of now. Thankfully. When I do, I'll come back to this thread and post some pictures.

Did you re-read my reply to your OP, as I had done some edits?

It could be due to how you are assembling or pre-assembleing your coils / wicks on your builds.

Micro coils or wrapped coils?

Shorten the distance between the posts and the coil.

I learned most of my stuff from watching videos from superxdrifter. He has some great videos. I was sick through Christmas and New Year's but I'm ready to try the readyxwick soon. I'll let you know how much I think I'm going to love it.

dani,

After you build the coil and check resistance put it on the mod and fire it to get rid of hot legs. Check out Russ' vid on getting rid of hot legs too. Basically, insert something slightly smaller - as to not deform it - into the coil and move it back and forth.... I find that anything with less than 6/7 wraps, hot legs are an issue - no matter the leg length.

From there, you should good to wick.

"Cueing"

Also, I noticed sometimes the coil will still not glow evenly because of a slight abnormality... usually, moving the coil up/down/out a little bit or strumming the outside will fix it.

After you build and mount the coil, and run the mandrel back through it, rub the coil with it slightly. Russ's video's show this. After several tries if you cannot get ride of the hot leg, dump the coil and start over. Do not bother wicking it until you get rid of the hot legs.

hot legs produce a lot of heat without vapor and will give you the taste of a dry hit even when you have enough juice left in the wick. You would thing that there is something wrong with the RxW because your getting dry hits to soon.

I'm sorry, ItTechy, I had to re-read. Now I understand. So, I should basically have my coils closer to my posts?

Yes.

This is usually is the cause; the "legs" are too long......:D Oh my I best not say too much.....LOL

Nothing beats a great pair of legs!

Here's an older video Russ made evidently when he used the RM2. It shows how to make a great Microcoil (how I still make my coils as well), and how to get rid of hot legs - which takes a few seconds to do.

Always look for this when making coils:
  • When pulse firing a coil, you always want to see the coil to glow orange from the Center of the coil, and then expand outwards to the end of the coil. Legs should not glow orange at all.

  • If one of the two legs glows orange BEFORE the coil does...you have a hot leg.

Here's a beautiful Homemade coil jig. This is the old school way of making a coil, just in case you don't have all the new toys of making coils. I still do this method. Much quicker, and easier. After a few attempts, you'll wrap coils like it's nothing.

If you don't want to make one, here's a link to a similar coil jig as the Dark Zero coil jig.

Update:

I just built a beautiful 5/4 coil on a 7/64 drill bit and it came out beautifully. I checked for hot legs and it did have them. I did what SuperX said to do in his last video and it worked perfectly and got rid of them. I then threaded my 3mm readyxwick and vaping Wakonda. I'm a happy girl.

Good Job Dani

BTW if any of you guys want a 'Coiling Gizmo" like Super X uses in his video they are readily available on Ebay and Amazon.

A good price is around $15.00

If you do decide to get one, be sure you get the version that has the table clamp and all five or six of the rods.

You can also use the Gizmo to make Clapton Coils!

It was originally designed for jewelry making using wire, so it's a natural for making vaping coils! :thumb:

Woohoo! Way to go. I love that little trick from SuperX...it works every time. Quick, easy and it works. Can't beat it

Or @ your local micheals or hobby lobby. Micheals coupons can be found- mine was $8.

Believe it or not, but I own one of these. Couldn't make anything to use the 3mm readyxwick in it, though.

I need to get this off my chest.

I have an addiction to Reo's now.

I ordered Reo #2 yesterday. Filthy-Beast is allowing me to use his one of a kind Cyclone. I am stupid excited. I chose the LP Black Wrinkle Grand. I am so, so excited. Now I have one for my ADV and one for my desserts.

SO excited.

I ordered it yesterday around 2pm. Do you all think it was shipped yesterday or will it be Wednesday?
