As pointed out, get the samples from Maxim-IC. I ordered them and got them in about 5 days or so.

The board from Sparkfun measures 4cm x 4cm, which is almost 2" x 2" (1"=2.54cm)... that's a lot to try to cram in a battery enclosure, and the alternative is a rather large and in charge mod. Also, look at the pic of the board from Sparkfun... the teeny tiny chip directly behind the mini USB port is the chip that controls the charging.

Maybe contact cybervex and see if he'd sell you just the custom PCB, that way you get the USB charging and still get your hands on time?

Don't know about that, but it is a good point. From the Maxim site about their charger chips:
The MAX1551 and MAX1555 charge a single-cell lithium-ion (Li+) battery from both USB* and AC adapter sources. They operate with no external FETs or diodes, and accept operating input voltages up to 7V.
