You need a meter that will read "Ohms". Most (inexpensive) VOMs (Volt Ohm Meter) or DVMs (Digital Volt Meter) will do it "OK".
You put the meter on the Ohms scale, short the two leads together and verify that the meter reads "0" Ohms.. then put one probe on the
threaded portion of the atty and the other on the center "pole" (battery contact). Read the resistance on the meter.
