I just wrapped my first coil a couple days ago--a messy 1.8ohm that I got by rewrapping a broken coil that came in a terrible rba system I've had laying around untouched for months. Short of it is that I'm hooked now, and have ordered a nimbus clone and a couple extra pre-wrapped 1ohm coils. Several hours of youtube later, I have a few questions.

How do I wrap the standard 2.5ohm coils I'm used to? All the internet vids I've seen are sub-ohm builds. They vary greatly in number of wraps, length, etc but they keep them really low ohm. It must be a wire thickness thing, right? I've noticed they go for the fatter gauges.

Would I want to drop my ohms? Previously I'd been keeping to 2.5 because I seemed to have more control over the 'tuning' of flavor in my protanks, but that may have been outdated advice.

Also, I plan on putting the fake nimbus on my vamos--any issues with that? Safety? Triggering cut-outs? How low would it handle, before protecting the battery?

Also, cotton. I used part of a cotton ball right from under the sink. I now notice people are boiling organic cotton for this. What's the reason for that? Is there something added to cotton balls that I wouldn't like?

I believe the Vamo won't go below 1.2 ohms

Some cotton has sizing in it to help hold the fibers together. Boiling it releases the sizing and it floats to the surface. Running the pot with the water still in it under the faucet washes it out. Some people will run their cotton through 2 or 3 boil and rinse cycles.

For Protank and Evod heads I prefer a 1.8 ohm coil. Try a microcoil wrapped on a 1/16" mandrel with the wire under tension as you wrap it with the coils all touching each other. A company called Artistic Wire makes a simple device for coiling wire for jewelry that wraps coils easy peasy. Michaels has them for around $12. 30 AWG and 7/8 wraps or 28 AWG and 9/10 wraps will get you close to 1.8 ohms. You won't believe the clouds, relatively speaking, you'll blow from a Protank or Evod with these coils. They last much longer too due to the wire being heavier than the stock coils. Clean and dry burn twice a week and throw a new cotton wick in there and you're good to go. Your wick should leave just a slight gap above it in the groove which will then be covered by the silicon grommet. No flavor wick like the stock coils use is necessary.
