How do PG and VG compare?

I have seen many references to PG and VG liquids but no mention of the differences.

I know that VG is much thicker than PG but what about the amount of vapour etc.?

I am researching things for my step son who is unfortunately mentally disabled, and as a result he is very into 'lots' of anything [ie. vapour], but not good at determining the difference between 2 things for himself. I have bought both pure VG and pure PG juices but he has so many problems just keeping the cigarettes working (overheating atomizers and dirty screw threads mostly) that he has a hard time doing a real apples to apples test.

He often complains that the smoke is harsh - I think due to overheating - so might that problem be reduced by using PG, VG or a mix?

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks ... Mike

Mike, Good on ya to be researching this on behalf of your son. I'll try and provide what answers I can, and hopefully a veteran can add more to it.

VG is thicker than PG.

VG also produces more vapor than PG.

The harshness that your son is experiencing could be due to a number of reasons.
1) Dry atty: The atty is not getting enough juice, and he is vaping "burnt" matting, or filler.
2) High PG concentration: Juices that have a high PG content 90+ % could account for harshness or "throat hit".
3) High Nicotine count: Juices with Nic counts of 24 or more could also account for harshness.

If I had to summarize and provide a suggestion, I would say get your son a juice that is higher in VG, with a low nic count (maybe 12 or 18).

Hope this helps. Best of luck!

What He said. PG makes better throat hit and VG makes better vapor.
