Micro vs nano vs horizontal vs vertical?? What method do you use and why? What gauge kanthal? Just wondering. I use 28 gauge, but thinking about dropping to 26

I just wind my own coils here and there when I'm running low in stock coils. But them, I'm just rebuilding Kanger heads using 5 or 6 wraps, so I use 32 gauge Kanthal because it gives me the +/- 2 ohm resistance I'm looking for. I'd probably get better performance from smaller wire. Wire size is dependent on space in the atomizer and what resistance you are trying to achieve.
32 ga Kanthal dula 12 wraps @ .90 ohms works for me. I wrap these on sewing needles. Size of the needle is about the same as the M4 allen wrenches that comes with the clones. I use cotton but I don't thread the wicks through the coils, just overlap them.

Sirius, does it wic well with overlapping it like that?

I settled for very simple builds that work well in my choice of RDA's (A7)
I use a 5/6 wrap 30 or 32 ga, dependant on the voltage drop under load of the PV I'm building it for, and wrap around three strands of 0.8mm silica. (so old school so far)
When I do the wrap it starts out looking like this.

Then I use the old thumb nails to make it look like this.

Then I dry burn and use tweezers to squeeze the coils into a micro.
And, after almost two months worth of use, it looks like this.

The aqua clone I picked up had coils that looked like your top picture. Extremely uniform. But spaced out. Why are a lot of the premade coils spread, and a lot of the builds pinched so tight they are like a tube?
The ones I'm building look like a solid tube when I'm done. I'm going to have to wind one sloppy to see if it makes a difference?
I found the easiest way to get them literally perfect is to scrunch it together still on the bit, grab both loose ends in vice grips and pull. Hard. It will cement them into a bunched coil if you've already torched them. Torching them again between tweezers is when they get wonky like a slinky especially if they're taller. (For me).
So, anyone care to guess why shipped coils are loose?
Because the coil wrappers at the factory haven't cought up with what's going on in the real world.
Actually, at a factory they would never heat the coils to make a micro, nor would they ever use cotton wick.
(once the coils have been heated, they can never be left dry)
