How do you know if a battery is counterfeit?

Just ordered 2x Sony 18650 VTC4 from EVcigarettes.com. They aren't here yet, and I assume the vendor is reputable...

I mean, anyone could simply rewrap it, amirit?

You kind of have to search around for conventional wisdom and such. However one almost foolproof test is performance -- if it performs like the real thing then it is real ... or it doesn't matter if it's not real lol

the photo on their site looks like the real deal.
you should be able to read the lettering through the wrapper. match the lettering, including font and spacing to this set of product photos:
