How I got rid of my burnt atomizer taste

Well I was smoking my 510 and it got really hot. After that I had this really weird 'burned fish' taste. I was going to buy a new atomizer but I read somewhere to 'dry burn' the atomizer so I did it, but it didn't work. What I actually did was dry burn while dunking the atomizer in a cup of water, then shake out all the water, burn until coil is red and repeat several times.

After all that I did one last dry burn until the coil was red. I dripped some liquid into the atomizer and topped off a new cart and the bad taste is gone.

Looks like I won't have to get a new atomizer yet...

First...thank you so much to all who've put their posts up on this forum.
With your ingenious gadgetry, tweaking parts and expirementing, You've helped me go from a pck n a half a day to 1-2 cigs/ day....yesterday I had NO analog cig for the first time in 20 yrs...YAY ME

I started w/ an evo from innovapor on 8-9-09 , But 10 days later, had to purchase a joy510 for the manual switch as the auto batts drain due to loud music while at band practice.

THE BIGGEST DOWNER FOR THE AUTO BATT- no good for a guitar player w/ a Krank Rev amp that goes to 11 ;)

I have no camera to load pics, so this may be a bit txt heavy-SORRY

Now the crux...I had monster taste and vapr from my 510 for the first day or so-then kept getting the burnt taste etc...fought for two days to regain the original testicular fortitude of my new found fog machine..switching,carts,atts the typical hoops we jump through...LOL

I kept thinking it was an 510 att prob, cuz I NEVER got that taste from my EVO unless it was flooded- as most know, the respective atts do differ

After a closer inspection of one of my used 510 atts, i dug out w/ a dental hook, what i thought was stock cart material to discover it was actually BURNT nylon string...found the same thing in another used att that I thought was trash, but kept so I could take it apart to see how it works

FOR US NEW USERS...Look straight down the inside of the 510 att, youll see a white round ceramic ring, and the metal mesh...look close and youll see the string hanging out one or both sides from under the metal....Thats the culprit

Cleaned it all out of both of my used atts...and BAM My 510 had its BALLZ BACK....YAY

So I took the two unused 510 atts I have, dug out the string prior to priming,
And they both work great.-Digging out the string is WAY easier when the atts are un-used

The break-in was also MUCH quicker in addition to CONSISTENCY amongst the
four fully functional Atts I have

To be thorough b4 I made this post, I also tried All 4 atts using carts modded w/ t-bags coupled w/ the straw mod...and tried stock 510 carts...sure enough, BOTH carts put out MONSTER VAPOR and MONSTER taste- YAY!!!

A dental pick works GREAT for this fix- (the metal ones like our beloved dentists use)...you may need to bend a sharp hook in the tip

Dig in, grab the string -NOT THE MESH...give a light pull and the string comes out of one side making it reachable to pull out w/ tweezers or needle nose pliers,
W/ new atts, its a 30 sec affair- used ones take some tenacity to get all of the burnt string out

IMHO- the only "logical" purpose for the string in the 510 atts, would be to help prevent flooding and or draining into the batt connection?

BTW- dripping on the "stringless" atts...oh YA MAN...A must try

SORRY about the short novel LOL

Yep that string/fibers have always had my suspicions, but I thought that it is crucial part of the wick that transfers the liquid to the coil?

So long as the metal bridge is in contact with the filler, or kept moist with liquid somehow, it will turn the liquid into vapor if the atty warms up to the proper temperature. Any extra fibers clinging onto or protruding from that metal bridge, I don't believe, are providing any assistance.

To give a quick test, you can take a dry atty, one that you've blown out, say, to change flavors. Drop a drop or two of liquid onto it, you can actually watch the bridge absorb the liquid. That's how I understand, that the atty works, as far as transferring the liquid.

Hmm - now I'm torn.

I just tried this on an 801 atty (a BE112 from BesteCig) as a last resort, and it is the only thing that has worked in my quest to eliminate the horrid burnt taste that was plaguing my atomizer. Removing the little piece of string finally did the trick.

Of course, I'm now reading a few of you saying that removing this piece of string will trash my atty quickly. God, I hope you're wrong. ;-)

What does removing the string mess up? I'm wicking like a champ here without it...at least for now.

I ripped them out of one of mine, and it now floods in seconds, can't use it to vape with unless I want to spend 1 minute vaping and 30 minutes faffing. Never again will I try that!

yep , same thing happened to me. It was a genuine joye-510 atty , a TITAN version from totally wicked...

saw the hairs , ripped em out , now it vapes like ... poo. worse flavor , no wicking , instantly floods.

I initially bought my 510 kit with 4 extra attys and way too many carts (didnt know better) The other day I was playing golf and had my 510 in my pocket. I didnt realize I was sitting on the button and after that all I tasted was burnt. I figured I was going to ruin my atty by following you instructions (sorry I had my doubts) but it worked. Could not be happier. thanks so much

Pulling out the string killed one of my first atomizer about 4 months ago. I was cleaning it and saw the string and pulled it out thinking it was stuck cart material. I believe that string is used to wick fluid onto the coil from the bridge, the 510 has a unique bridge compared to my other attys, where the bridge also goes around the base, but with the others... once that material is out, you get no wicking at all.
Anyways, after looking at my dead atty for a while I came up with a solution (that I haven't tried on the 510's yet). I took coffee filter and ripped 4 tiny (probably 1/16th inch) strands about 1/4 inch long, rolled them into 4 "strings" and stuffed them under the bridge so that they touched both the bridge and the coil. Too many strands made it hard to puff, too few lost wicking ability.

Anyhow, I may try it on one of my 510's since I get a burnt taste after about 4 puffs on it. I'd use slightly longer strands (maybe 3/8"~1/2" long) and probably 5 of them.

hey...sorry to hear some have had probs by removing the string.
I'm fairly new to this "tech" stuff, I just wanted to pass it along to try and give something back to this forum.
So if youve sacrificed any hrdwr doing this...again sorry

So I'm a bit baffled w/ the inconsistent results.

FYI...I'm using the atts w/ string removed that I recieved in a starter kit from innovapor
As of my original post about removing the said culprit...I'm still on the same atts.

I constantly rotate 3 batts I have on charge and VAPE MY FREAKIN BRAINS OUT, especially in the eve's and wknds...matter of fact I'm lookin into a pv because of the whole battery charging drama LOL..any suggestions?

From the first post on the thread, I was thinking this exact same thing. Why would a string be in the atomizer? It must have a purpose. What do stings typically do in a liquid/flame(heat) scenario? It wicks...

I've been dripping on my same to original 510 attys for about 2+ months, and just the other night I was thinking to myself, the vapor is actually better now than it was months ago.

I donno, maybe I'm just lucky.

yea, i made a bit of a booboo on my spare atty for my 8084. i was rotating 2 daily, and happened to see some fibres hanging out of one. it didnt look right so i pulled em out. thought it was packing or something. i pulled the lot out. well it still sorta works. just tastes like crap and doesnt really vape to well, so i put it in the 'only use if desparate' pile. i think ill just stick to blowing them out...
