jd, I think the solid metal bridge is there to prevent the wool bridge from being pressed onto the heating coil. I would imagine that the turbulence and resulting pressure drop, suction effectively, of our inhalations could place quite a bit of pressure onto the wool bridge from the cartridge material, that coming into contact with the heating coil could potentially cause all sorts of nasty things to happen, not the least of which could be a wee shock in the gob mate ! Oh and the death of it's electronics.

Looking at the possible airflow patterns, I think that the droplets are created from the basket surrounding the pot rather than from the bridge, that I think is there only to draw the liquid into the basket.

Perhaps there is a more effective way of getting the liquid to the mesh surrounding the wire basket. The cartridge-wool to the steel-wool transfer leaves alot to be desired - mainly that you can end up with a bunch of liquid left in the bottom of the cart. The straw method, as detailed by Katink, about halfway down the page works allright, and provides a longer time between cart-replacements. There must be a better way.

Combine this with a non-burning atomizer center, and we've got something.

hell, if someone makes a good ultrasonic one, i'd pay the price. .

Me too- We're already paying big prices for devices that don't last, how much more expensive would an ultrasonic one be? I'd rather pay another 50$ and get somethign that's goign to last 6-8 months or more, than to have to keep paying for atomizers that burn out- this would also be a boon for the ecig makers as they could then stop having to replace the atomizers, and would make hteir money off of Cart sales, battery sales & accesory sales.

I was just thinking about my cartridge idea, and now realize it's a silly waste. The only thing that wears out on these things is the coil/thread heating element, So the cheapest/most conservative thing would be to make an e-cig where this part is easily replaceable. Thereby we could buy a whole bag of the little rope/coils for a dollar or two, then just flip back the steel wool bridge and plug a new one in as needed.

Oh, and you guys with rn4081s watch out for your cleaning cycle. It's like a mission impossible device destructor. The light will start flashing and you will hear the atomizer bubbling for about 20 seconds. It almost always leaves a bit of a burnt taste, and if you don't have the atomizer completely saturated/full of e-liquid when the cycle decides to start, there goes your thread! This cleaning cycle is dictated by the battery, as it is what stores the number-of-puffs info apparently, so I lost a brand new atomizer the other day. I took a couple drags off it, put it in my pocket and noticed my pocket was burbling, took it out to find it flashing the cleaning cycle, and yep it was burnt...

i've gotten into the habit of removing my battery whenever it flashes on my mini.. Sometimes it does that. After that it tastes like smoking a firework for half a day.

yes, I really don't understand what this "cleaning cycle" is supposed to achieve. In the manual it claims to heat clean the atomizer, and as we all know from the way these things work, you can't heat clean a fiber.

I think it is an engineered failure. Self Cleaning Looks cool on paper, but not so cool in action.

Here's the simplest/cheapest solution to the burnt taste with the current e-cig design. With a minor redesign the steel wool bridge is hinged, it flips back, with tweezers you yank the old burnt coil/fiber out, and plug a new one in. Since it's just a wire with a bit of thread in it it couldn't cost more than a couple bucks for a whole bag of these things.

Jarvis, have you taken a look at hte loongtotem design yet? I really couldn't tell from Mixos' vid, but it looked like a simpler design- maybe even more robust- especially if it could be built with a manual on off switch and do away with auto sensor altogether

Mixos doesn't seem to be running into thast problem- I'm thinking that the oens that might burn up are perhaps smoked too long until they are dry

I know that in airmass sensors a self cleaning cycle is used, but that sensor has a platinum wire and the heat burns all residue off.
In case of Atomizers it is more likely a "Buy me a new Starter Kit" signal.
Just the idea to heat clean plastic fiber is very sick. There must be some better material out there for the coil or a different coil design which dies not need fiber. Heat and plastic sounds not healthy. 8-o

Well Well i've been here for 2 months or so and also believe this needs a bump as it is very very interesting reading.

In fact these days i don't read, just scan and pick out the data i want but this thread stopped me and made me do that which i hate the most, reading!

My sedansa has just packed up and tommorow am gonna rip the btch to bits just to see if they are all the same, as when she smoked....she was the queen

Giving off a burnt flavour even after several cleaning sessions so placed it in atomizer heaven
