Well I was smoking my 510 and it got really hot. After that I had this really weird 'burned fish' taste. I was going to buy a new atomizer but I read somewhere to 'dry burn' the atomizer so I did it, but it didn't work. What I actually did was dry burn while dunking the atomizer in a cup of water, then shake out all the water, burn until coil is red and repeat several times.

After all that I did one last dry burn until the coil was red. I dripped some liquid into the atomizer and topped off a new cart and the bad taste is gone.

Looks like I won't have to get a new atomizer yet...

This makes no sense to me.

"Burn until the coil is RED?"

You mean inside the atomizer, I didn't see anything turning red, I held down the button forever. It sure got hot, but I didn't see any red in there.

okay well, update here...

I recommend only doing this as a last resort because the burnt taste is coming from that 'wicking fiber' being burnt, that vapor is harmful to inhale.

At this point, the boiling can either remove that burnt fiber that is in the way of the atomizer's coil, or it will make the 'wicking fiber' come off all together.

If that wicking fiber is off completely, from my experience, the only way to get vapor will be to drip directly on the atomizer coil.

Generally to sum this up, the article is about leaving your atomizer on too long when its dry and that causing the wick inside to burn up, I recommend getting a new atomizer all together and being more careful to not let the atty get too hot (ie: leaving it in your pocket, cramming it in your purse) because it will burn the wicking and your atty will be messed up, boil it as a last resort.

TIP: cutting my e-liquid with glycerin gives off like 200 times more vapor. I do like 30% glycerin 70% eliquid (25mg)

Don't completely remove the sting from the body of the atomizer. Just make sure the string isn't caught underneath the bridge and being burnt by the heating element.

This is what causes the excessive heat and bad taste. This and any stray fibers of cartridge material that may be stuck down there. Do remove any stray pieces of cartridge material.

When the string is on the side of the bridge, it will come in contact with the wicking material instead of the heating element.

If done correctly, an atomizer that you have basically given up as being dead should work like new.

This has been my experience with a 510 at least.

Use some type of pick and work the string out instead of a tweezers. If you use a tweezers you could end up pulling the string completely out of the atomizer.

If you are having problems with your e-cig burning while in your pocket or in purse the easiest solution is.....

DISASSEMBLE IT!

If the atty is not attached to the battery it will not turn on!

If you never let it get dry or burn too hot, this material wont burn.

Also, from personal experience, taking the fiber out from under the bridge will make it work differently, not necessarily better, but differently.

This is INCORRECT information.

On the 510 atty (not other models) there is a wick that is trapped under the wicking material at the top of the bridge, and it runs directly down to the heating element under the bridge. You should be able to see part of the loop sticking out the side of the bridge.

The wick is supposed to be caught under the bridge.... do not pull it free!

Whenever I get a burnt taste, it just means that I need to top off or switch out the cart filler... then it goes away. I don't have to dry burn or clean my atomizer... I've been using the same atomizers for over two months now and I vape quite a bit, and they're still going strong... When I first came upon these forums and read how people were going through an atomizer a week, I thought I would need a ton, so I bought 20+ atomizers of all different types (801, 510, 901), but I have not had the same issue... Just because you get a burnt taste, it doesn't mean the atty is bad... you just have to refill. It makes sense that if there's no liquid in the cartridge, then you're just going to taste burning filler... right?

They mean a REALLY burnt taste. One that tastes like molten metel dripping into dog poo and topping off or cleaning won't make go away.:(

Okay, this post makes the most sense to me. I have a Smoking Everywhere cigarette, which I am taking for granted is a "501" automatic battery style? I am not even sure of this the right terminology. So far it has been great, but I have had it just about 2 weeks or so.

Today it comes up giving a very foul metal taste. Really nasty. Out of all the posts I have read so far, this one makes sense. So I went digging with a paper clip and discovered what I believe you are calling a "string". It had caked on stuff, what I think may have been old, burnt cartridge material. Anyhow, when I loosened up this "string" with the caked on material with the paper clip, the stuff came loose. Now I just have what amounts to a steel string hanging out of my atomizer.

Is this the way it is supposed to be?

Unfortunately I do not have any new carts to test with. I will report back tomorrow after I buy a pack.

I'd also pick up a new atomizer. It sounds like you may have snagged the coil that vaporizes the liquid. If so, your ecig just became a paper weight until the atty is replaced. Good luck.
