So yesterday I decided it was time to quit smoking again. I live in NH, aka the middle of nowhere. I had to drive an hour to the only head shop around that carries worthwhile e-cigs and juice. I spent all my cash on the parts and juice and I purposefully did not buy cigarettes. So I did not want to have to wait 8 hours for the battery to charge properly. I started getting irritated because of lack of nicotine so I decided that I was going to attempt to build some kind of passthrough. I vape with a Joye 510 but I used to use the m401. While rummaging through boxes of cords, and other scrap electronic odds and ends I found a couple 401 USB chargers. I quickly realized that the 510 atty screws perfectly into the 401 charger. So now the hard part was over... I had a connector. I then took an old USB cable (it had two transistor things on it, one near the computer terminal and one near the device terminal. I cut off the transistor (i think that's what it is) and the device terminal leaving me with a USB cable with the computer terminal and the other end open wire.

I did some research and noticed that there are 4 wires inside a USB. Black, red, green and white. The ones we want to use are the black&red. I unscrewed the 401 charger apart and removed the circuit board, being careful to leave the red&black wires that provide power to the terminal intact. So now you should have an empty 401 charger with the red&black wires still connected.

I then connected the USB cable's red&black wires to the 401 chargers wires. Red to red, black to black. I taped them together and bingo! I screwed in my new Joye 510 atty and heard that familiar sizzle! It worked. And damn, that things rips way better than it ever could with the batteries they provide you with. You can't screw the atty on all the way or no air will get through, causing hard drags and possibly damage to the atty. I believe that a USB runs at 5 volts. I don't think that is too much, as long as you are careful.

After this initial test I then threaded a simple circuit breaking switch through the positive (one of the old circular lamp switches that are on the power cord) to act as the 'button'. When I take a drag, I flip the switch before inhaling and then flip it again to cut the power when I've completed the drag. It's a little ghetto, but it actually produces MUCH more vapor, like I imagine any passthrough would. Unfortunatly it broke after about an hour, I think I soldered something wrong and it came loose inside the charger port.

I am going to rebuild it today, and take step by step pictures to post. Now anyone with a 510, a sparer USB cable and an m401 charger can build a passthrough! The whole process took about an hour, including all the research and diagrams I drew. The best part is, since I have a USB car charger and a USB wall charger, and a laptop, I can vape perpetually virtually anywhere! I'll save the batteries for when I'm not near a computer, outlet, or in a car. And of course if you're out and about you don't want to deal with wires to get your nic fix.

So, what do you think? I'll post a picture a little later after I fix/rebuild it.

Okay...So I took apart the passthrough and discovered the problem was just a loose wire, easy fix. Note that this is just a prototype, and I will make a more attractive and convenient model next. But for now, I can vape perpetually at my computer, on the road, or near an outlet thanks to my homemade ghettoish passthrough, which is 100% functional (and ugly.) I spent a total of $0.00 on parts, as I used random stuff from around the house. Here are the pictures of the device. I reccomend using electrical tape. I didn't have any. This is for someone on a budget.

And a few more pictures since I can only have 5 per post.

Hope you like it! Thanks for reading. Let me know if you have any suggestions (besides making it more fashionable, I'm working on that.
